I read this on hoopla and then went straight to buy my own ebook for re-reading, and then just fully re-read it.
This is a simple fairytale-esque novella about Weber, a drifter who is running out of road and ends up exactly where he needs to be. He's a self-effacing 'aw shucks ma'am 't'weren't nothin' type of guy (except in the bedroom with Cyrus) who charms everyone, even the fellow who is vying for Cyrus's attentions at the family gathering.
Because it's so over the top and 'waves crashing on a shore while the soundtrack crescendos with tremolo' swoony, I could overlook anything that seemed unrealistic. Bc that's clearly not what was the aim here. The aim was Big Declarative Statements of LOVE and Fidelity and Home is Person not a Place and it GOT me, okay? I was gotten.
I'll probably cave and buy the audiobook soon, too.

I still really like Weber and Cyrus. I'm glad I reread it!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This book took me a little bit to get into. I really liked Weber and Cyrus together. What I didn't like was all of Weber's insecurities. Literally, they lasted almost the entire book. It just didn't make sense to me why he always needed to leave. I knew he thought he wasn't good enough, but it didn't make sense when he would then say love was never our problem.
What kept me reading was his relationship with the kids, Cyrus's sister, the interaction at Cyrus's parent's house. I wanted to slap Cyrus's brother for some of the things he said. I wished that Weber could see how much he was needed with them earlier in the book. There was too much focus on him not having a prestigious job.
2.5 stars. After all the enthusiastic reviews I was looking forward to reading this book. Sadly it didn't really work for me. I thought everybody loved Weber just a little too much to be believable and his whole woe is me routine got old really quickly. I never really got a good handle on Cyrus and we didn't actually see much of the development of their relationship, both before and after Web's final entrance into Cyrus's life. The kids and the way they bonded with Web were the highlight of the book.
I really liked this book, I liked the fact that they were "established" couple. It briefly went into their past, but didn't get to the down and dirty of the last three years. I think the wrap up was quick, but I could see how it could have dragged on. I love how the MC1 was a different person in MC2 presence. Really a sweet book, specially the epilogue. It just made mention that a relationship still takes effort.
Really sweet story with likable characters.
Sometimes it is great just to read a feel-good story with a happy, ever after ending.
Very cute. The guys loved each other a lot. I can see where Cy was coming from at the end, I'm that way also.
The beginning was promising until it became repetitive in the second half.
Though I liked Weber better of the two MCs, Weber's insistence that he was nobody worth anyone's time, especially a rich, handsome, prince-ly neurosurgeon's time, was getting tiresome.
Weber's pride coupled with his stubbornness and self-doubt were preventing him to take a chance on the love that Cy was trying to give him, believing he was only good for sex and nothing else.
What Weber himself does not see is how people warm up to him quickly, that he was adored by Cy's family, especially Carolyn's kids, and that they don't prejudice against him for not having a steady job or an illustrious career.
In the beginning, Weber's refusal to be Cyrus' kept man was commendable, and he's not with him just for his money, but even after it's been established that this is not the case, his nagging doubt still remains and Weber needed constant reminders that he was loved the way he is.
I wasn't so keen on the PDA that dragged on at the end, and how the sudden but brief appearance of an ex was totally unnecessary. But if it's just to prove a point already driven to death, then so be it.
The saving grace of the book is how Weber served a purpose in the Benning's lives, kids, pets and all. That Weber's presence is felt for those who are fortunate enough to know him.
God, this was an emotional sucker punch right from the first page. I was instantly floored. There was such desperation in there and I absolutely loved that.
Such an intense, beautiful story. I’ve been yearning for something like this. Weber was such a cinnamon roll and Cyrus loved him so desperately much, but had such a hard time trying to convince him of that. I loved their connection. I also loved how most people around them fell for Weber too—they all thought he was too good and too pure to be real, basically.
I could have done with a little less of the family focus with the sister’s family, but that was my only complaint aside from the book being so short. I wanted so much more of Weber and Cyrus.
i know deep down in my heart that weber votes republican and it's going to become an issue because cy is a very politically involved democrat.
