Ug. DNF. This just bored the hell outta me. I read about 70 pages before I gave up. I'm not sure I want to even continue this series...I have the next two. The next one's about the sister at the auction house who didn't seem interesting, what little I read of her.

I've really liked most, if not all, of this author's previous books, so I'm not sure why this one bored me so completely.

I loved the way this book handled the heroines from the wrong side of town trope, and that she worked at an auction house. The hero wasn't quite as broody as I like my post-war soldiers, but good nontheless.

Meredith Duran is one of the most sophisticated historical romance writers out there. She has such a great sense of both character and psychology of character based upon the time period which they inhabit.

I won a free copy of this book from a good reads giveaway.

This book took me a long time to get through. I usually love Duran's writing so I think maybe my lack of interest in this book is maybe just a sign of the start of a reading slump and not a reflection of the book itself. I liked the characters and the storyline of a former thief, girl from the slums and the war hero who is trying to save his loved ones from a mad Russian but I felt at a distance from them. I never got completely drawn into the story and it was easy to not pick up again once I had put it down. I also would have liked to have seen more of Christian interacting with his family but that's a very minor complaint. I think, at some point in the future, I will reread this book and end up enjoying it a lot more. I am very interested in Catherine's and Nick's story. The uptight, rich, career-driven woman and the unscrupulous thief that runs the slums is an interesting match I'm looking forward to reading about.

Lilah 'Lily' and Christian's story is interesting because Christian really has this manipulative upper hand against her which made for didn't-want-to-put-it-down realness.

Plot is a 6/10 bananas. Lily is interesting, Palmer is not. The sequel with Nick/Catherine is better.
