I couldn't get past the narrator’s present tense. The idea was good, but I was constantly pulled out of the story by the narrator. DNFed. The narrator on the audiobook wasn't great either.

The cover and book gave me vibes of murderous Dead Poets Society mixed with Matilda but make it more religious and demons. “We survive because of rules. Without them, we are no more than lost sheep.” Deals with an all boys orphanage in a Catholic Church. The boys get mistreated with “punishments” like Mrs Trunchbull from Matilda but worse. I am an Atheist so that’s why it’s getting less than 5 stars because too much God Talk for me.

An extremely addictive Catholic orphanage demon possession freak-show, and a new horror classic perfect for the upcoming winter. Make sure you have an escape plan for when the snow arrives.
3.5!!
this book was really good!! it was a little slow at the beginning but i got into it and read it pretty quickly. al thought i did enjoy it, there are a few things i wasn’t really a fan of.
first off, i would say the characters were a bit dull. sheik i did end up liking peter, i felt myself kind of bored with his and andrew’s scenes. i wish we saw more of the turmoil he felt between becoming a priest and wanting a life with grace because it felt like a kind of big plot point that wasn’t explored that deeply?? like it’s presented as an issue, not mentioned again, then peter becomes a priest in the last few chapters (i understand why im just a bit bothered by it). i also think peter was sort of a bland character for a while, like being the one who does good and takes care of everything, kind of like being a token main character. there didn’t seem to be a lot of depth to him. i honestly felt myself caring more about david, johnson, basil, and ben.
i did like the pov switch in some parts, but in the beginning it was really confusing because i couldn’t tell who was speaking. for a good chunk of the book i thought father white and andrew were the same person. i think i liked david’s and johnson’s chapters the most (though i wish we got more backstory on both)
the ending. :(
honestly, the ending felt sort of satisfying but i also didn’t really like it that much. i wish peter had lived and got to live a long life with grace and those he escaped with, but considering what happened, it makes sense why he died.
i knew he was going to die when he became a priest. i kind of hate that he became a priest, just because for most of the book he seemed disillusioned with religion and more focused on a life with grace, but it makes sense since peter doesn’t seem like the type of character to reject the dying wish of a man who raised him.
overall, it was a good book. there were some boring parts and some infuriating parts (like how poole kept insisting basil hung himself when it was so clearly not that) but yeah. this was a bit scrambled

The narration of the children by an adult man was pretty annoying, but I kept focusing on the story (better to read this one than listen), and I enjoyed it a lot. It did get repetitive and could have delved deeper into some themes, but honestly, I was still very engaged in the plot and horror elements. Really dark, gory, and absorbing. Solid ending.
