What is good book?
Scrolling through the reviews on this book I see a lot wich aren't very good, and honestly, I totally get it. Most of the characters were pretty flat und predictable as was the plot itself and the whole time the book felt like it was missing something important, though I failed to figure out what it is. And while I did enjoy all the pop culture references they weren't as great as in Ready Player One and sometimes felt a little bit clumsy and unnatural.
However, I still enjoyed this book a lot and loved every minute of reading it. Somehow, despite its flaws and despite the feeling that it indeed wasn't that good (and didn't quite catch up with Ready Player One) I really, really liked it and couldn't get it out of my head at some points. And that's what makes a book good, at least for me, in the first place.
What I also enjoy in Clines books in generall is his representation of Nerds and Geeks. Nothing weird, nothing stereotype. Someone once said about Charlie Bradbury (Supernatural) something in the line of: A character who happens to be a Nerd. And that is how I feel about Clines characters and why I love them so much. So thank you for that!

Based on reviews I had read, I went into Armada with low expectations. Ready Player One is one of my favorite books. I read it about 9 months ago (audio version) and thought there was finally enough time lapsed where my expectations for Armada wouldn't be so high. I was right.

Based on a friend telling me it was good and also my love for the narration by Wil Wheaton, I headed into Armada. I was very pleasantly surprised. Much shorter than Ready Player One, it was an easy and entertaining listen. I got through it in about three days, and I couldn't quit listening. It consumed me very quickly.

Lots of problems with this book for sure. But I was able to gloss over them and just keep listening and enjoy it for the entertainment it was providing. If you are on the fence about reading, just keep your expectations a little low and don't expect another Ready Player One, and I think you will be pleased.

This was not my kind of book. It's about video games and alien attack. At first it was entertaining, but later on I got a bit bored with the book. I'm usually not into science fiction but thought I'd try this.

This one was okay. There's only so much that lampshading a trope can do to make endless tropes palatable. Basically all of the beats were visible from a mile away and sometimes took way too long to get there. The book largely takes place over about 10 hours and there are some things so abrupt and glossed over and others that just get hammered to death. Wil Wheaton did a good job with the narration. Overall it was mildly enjoyable.

I knew from the moment he talked about famously anti-authoritarian, anti-imperialist film Star Wars was actually military propaganda that I was not going to like this book. I tried to take all the references and fun action at face value but it was frustratingly uncritical

I'm torn on this one. Not bad but certainly not great. Part of that is the difficulty of trying to follow up his first novel. And part was just that this one wasn't nearly as good. The plot had some abrupt shifts and fortuitously convenient adjustments and at times was just outside the realm of belief. Maybe just slightly better than okay.

I loved it - then I hated it - then I loved it - then I hated it.

In the end... it was OK. I don't *regret* reading it. I've thought about it a few times since I finished. I usually consider that a good sign...

If you're a fan of the genre it's worth reading. Otherwise, you're not missing too much.

Do you have to be a gamer to appreciate this book? :( I didn't enjoy it. I'm glad I'm done.
