I devour books with cults in them. I finished this book quickly, but it was missing an element of suspense. The Quiet Tenant was so dang good, this felt like a fizzle rather than a firework. Frida and Gabriel have a deep bond after growing up together. But Frida’s constant bending to what Gabriel needs/wants frustrated me.

Frida and Gabriel grew up in a cult, led by Emile. Although not related, they bonded as children, viewing each other as siblings. The story is in the present, where they are reuniting at a resort in Utah. However, one of the guests is murdered. Both Frida and Gabriel are considered persons of interest. We delve into the past when Frida and Gabriel were at the commune, and after they escaped. This is a slow-moving thriller, but I really enjoyed discovering all their secrets from the past. The audiobook is the way to go as it’s one of my favorites narrators.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. After reading and loving The Quiet Tenant by this author, I was excited to see just how this book would compare. I am pleased to say whilst being very different from The Quiet Tenant in that instead of a serial killer, this novel centred around Frida and Gabriel who had been raised in a cult their entire lives. Cults are not usually one of the tropes I lean towards reading but this book had me fully immersed in reading about their cult life and all of the darkness in it. We are following Frida and Gabriel as adults who have since escaped the cult and have also drifted apart from each other. The decide to spend some time together on a luxury vacation to rekindle their friendship which felt very much like a close brother/sister bond given that they had been raised, survived and escaped the cult together. A fellow holiday maker is killed at the resort and this starts causing their secrets and their past lives to rise to the surface and also causing Frida to start questioning Gabriel's connection to the victim. Told in both present and past time lines it was a fast paced unputdownable read. The suspense as things started unravelling and being revealed was palpable. Another gripping, captivating thriller read from Clemence Michallon. #clemencemichallon #knopf #netgalley #goodreads #getlitsy #thestorygraph #fable #tea_sipping_bookworm #thriller #bookqueen #bookstagram
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
The book had an interesting set up, but it just didn’t feel fleshed out enough. I think for it to flash between three different subplots/periods of time, we needed more detail in any of them. As it was, I felt like I only got a shallow level reading of all three.

I really enjoyed “The Quiet Tenant” by this author and had high expectations for this book. Unfortunately, this just wasn’t for me. Nothing about the story gripped me or held my attention. I was tempted to DNF throughout and ultimately felt very meh overall about this. I’d like to thank NetGalley and Elliott & Thompson for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
