One of the most interesting aspect of the book is how it challenges established ideas of prestige, education, and societal expectations. While I believe higher education is important, the book questions the reasons that motivate young people to go to university and whether this is the best decision for them as well as the problems with according too much importance to academics at the risk of sacrificing one’s identity and mental health.
Moderate: Bullying, Child abuse, and Animal death

**Read for Jordan Ford's Summer Reading Challenge 2020. Prompt 11. A book with a cover that made you want to read it without even looking at the description; & for #LgbtqMonth, prompt: blue cover**
Diverse cast. Aspec character.
I've read I Was Born for This (which is actually more recent) before Radio Silence]; and I've found these repeating elements:
- mcs who focus all their happiness into one thing and that is a fan thing. It's the only thing they have.
- mcs who don't have close friends
- need for communication/miscommunication
- mental health (not as directly topical as in I Was Born for This)
- public personas vs our need to be accepted for who we are ("Be yourself!" is very much the biggest theme)
- the good & bad of fandom
- low self-esteem & escapism (all mcs have so little love for themselves and are quick to take all the blame and carry it alongside all the guilt of the world at their backs) It's my fault! Mate, no, it f*ing isn't!! Their own self-esteem has self-esteem issues
- angel, angel, angel
- Joan of Arc (just light mention)
PSA: Take care of your friends/partners who are under the influence of substances

I listened to this on audiobook and really enjoyed it! This is my first book by the author. I loved the whole Universe City storyline and the narrator was easy to listen to. I didn't expect Aled's story to get so dark, but I'm glad for the discussions about mental health and getting out of toxic situations.
Graphic: Domestic abuse, Emotional abuse, and Mental illness
Moderate: Animal death, Suicidal thoughts, and Bullying
Minor: Homophobia

Quarantine read!
I've been dying to get read this for a long time since I heard about canon asexual characters and it did not disappoint. This book is impact writing at its finest. The short chapter style and prose made me think and engage while still remaining within the narrative. Im in my master's program right now so the relatability of the MC's doubts and dreams still hit despite my age. If I had read this right out of high-school, it would have broken me on a fundamental level. I dont think I can adequately put into words how much I loved it. Some of the references to memes and content circa 2014 Tumblr did pull me out of the story just a bit but I think they were near-essential for the book, so I'll allow it this time. I look forward to picking up more from this author (I have read Heartstopper as well).
