Okay, that was absurdly fun.

I'm a bit of an Ilona Andrews fan, not gonna lie. Kate Daniels was my first taste and proved to be both dark and absurdly kick-ass; the Sweep series thus far a bit more light but still just as engaging. Although I never made it that far in the Daniels series, when I spotted this book in the releases, I snapped it up without a thought. Didn't even read the synopsis--just trusted that it'd be quality.

Honestly this was one of the most gripping stories I've read this year. It was just FUN. Despite the somewhat slow-ish start for me--an explanation of Hugh's whereabouts if you will, which sort of stumped me as I'll admit I had no idea that this story connected with the Daniels series at all. Even not knowing that, once this story grabbed me, it grabbed me good. Certainly I probably got a few pretty killer spoilers for the rest of the Daniels series, but hey-ho. Worth it!!

The characters are great. I mean, this is such a killer combo for me--there's magic, supernatural, dark plots, battles, and on top of all that... there's the insta-hate between Hugh and Elara, two incredibly powerful and headstrong characters who are forced to cooperate with one another. And boy, do they collide in such a wonderful way. Their instant mistrust and dislike of each other sends sparks flying with each encounter.

Elara pictured him exploding into bloody mist. No. Too quick.

Two stubborn people forced together in an alliance of questionable nature--sound like the plot to a delightful rom-com? Yes! Throw that into the swirling mix of paranormal and you've got yourself one heck of a story.

Can't wait for the next! And in the meanwhile, perhaps I'll revisit the Daniels series just to figure out how the heck we got here.

Hnnngghhhh I love this book SO MUCH and listening to it was a whole other kind of experience. Wow oh wow oh wow. I'm so in awe and in love.

6th read, 1/13/24: PSUEDO redemption arc?! Past me, baby, this is a WHOLE redemption arc the likes of which we haven't seen since Prince Zuko. You didn't understand the full breadth of Magic Triumphs, Blood Heir, or the Wilmington Years before, but we know what it is now. I only wish that Iron Covenant #2 hadn't been too much of a bummer for them to write before because I just have to know where my man is at in between showing up in MT and then the brood he has 8 years down the line. I know you're next honey and I'll be waiting with bated breath.

1st read, 6/11/18: I'll never stop loving this book with every fiber of my being. 100% their best book to date, and it's about the most devious man in the entire series getting a psuedo-redemption arc. He's still everyone's favorite raging asshole, but now we know WHY and he is GROWING and has a WIFE and A WHOLE ASS FAM HE BUILT HIMSELF and it's just a torturous gift for my whole heart. Gonna reread Book 10 next for more of my guyyyyyy!!

Kate will always be my fave, but I liked learning about Hugh and seeing things from his perspective. I think the plot was a bit weak for me and there’s still so many questions I have. I guess that’s what the next book in the series is for.

I wasn't sure about reading this one since it is about Hugh and I'm not big on redemption stories, especially when the character is as reprehensible as Hugh but I'm glad I did!

Hugh and Elara are an entertaining and fun couple and the action was riveting. Yet another good story by Ilona Andrews!

This is such drivel I literally can’t even finish.
adventurous dark mysterious tense

The King and Queen of urban fantasy have done it again! Awesome story, so many wonderful characters that you want to cheer for. How in the world you guys turned Hugh into a “good guy” I’ll never figure it out, but thank you for doing it. I hope there will be more of Hugh and Elara and I can’t wait for the next Kate book. This is gonna be spectacular. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really like Ilona Andrews' books...there is something about them that hits all the right notes, without seeming forced. I saw the author team at Dragon Con this year, and it is clear that they put a lot of effort and thought into their books.

This one started sooooooo slooooooowly for me. I was almost considering DNF'n it. Unheard of for IA! But, once it got going, I really enjoyed it. Elara is a fascinating character - I can't wait for the reveal of what she and her people really are.

Now this was good fun

A spin-off from the Kate Daniels series, and following the events of book 9, this one has an interesting PoV of that of Hugh. Not a traditional choice for a PoV, it picks up finding him at his lowest point and forced into a wedding of convenience to protect his Iron Dogs. The other side of this is Ellara, a woman of mysterious powers trying to safeguard her people from a mutual enemy

As is the wont with Ilona Andrews books, this one has brutal, frenetic action, fast moving plots and quite a bit of romantic and sexual tension and powerplay. It definitely was dollops of fun while also expanding the mythology of Kate Daniels' world. It also features some guest appearances from that world.

The book worked even better than expected and sets up a bunch of intriguing follow ups.
