Lots of fun, lots of adventure, lots of sexual tension, but not quite as exciting as Kate and current, but I would still continue to read more

I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. It reminded me why I liked Hugh at first, too.... he's a bastard, but he's such an interesting, charismatic bastard. I enjoyed seeing him with his soldiers and navigating the waters of a post-Roland existence.

Also, I really loved Elara. I found her sassy and fun and interesting, and I really liked learning about her. Really want to learn more!

And on a spoilery note...
SpoilerI still know I'm not going to get what I want from Roland in the last KD book, but I was super proud of Hugh for saying no to him at the end. I hope he ends up showing up in the last KD book tbh, but I'm not holding my breath for it.

Well this was one of the things I’ve ever read

It takes place in the same setting as the Kate Daniels books, but from two other character’s point of view this time (Hugh and Elena). It starts a few months after the last Daniels book from what I can tell. It was pretty awesome to see some other ways that magic works in this world, and to see more people tell Roland to fuck right off. If you like the Kate Daniels series, this would be a good one to pick up.

I love that this wasn't a love at first sight gooey romance story. There is true love here that has to slowly build and grow, and the two of them love to poke at each other just like couples in real life. I also love that the entire book wasn't about sex, although there is some there. It isn't the focal point like a lot of books in this genre. It's about two people forced to tolerate each other, that discover that deep down they share pain, have scars, and in the end it works out for them.

Great book. Though I clearly need to read earlier books in order to understand the concept of magic and tech in this world. Author assumes I know this already. It didn’t really take too much away from the story but was a little annoying to not even have a cursory explanation for those new to the universe.

Dang it. The authors made me like the villain. Nice way to continue the story, but with a new focus. As always, awesome fight scenes, interesting characters, real issues.

That was better as a stand alone than most of the Kate Daniels series. Maybe because it was more of romance and less endless description of action or world?

3.5 stars

I enjoyed Hugh and Elara's story and I'm quite looking forward to the next one. This didn't get as high of a rating from me because it took a little bit for me to get into (in comparison to the other Kate Daniels books) and hasn't stuck with me quite as much in the weeks since. Still, I've enjoyed mostly everything I've read from Ilona Andrews and I'm looking forward to continuing through their backlist.

4th Read just as great, if not better than all of the other times I read it. - I love being back in this world.

3rd Read held up great - After a few just eh reads its time to pick up a favorite and read something I know I'm going to love.

4.5 Hugh you are a Bastard Stars

Audio Note I love Steve West as a narrator. I know he isn't everyone's cup-a-tea, but he is totally mine. I think he brought something to Hugh that was missing for me before and helped me want some kind of redemption for him. He helped make Hugh human. I totally enjoyed my second read of this book even more with the audio.

Beta read for the Andrews and I loved so many things!!!

Look I've never been head over heels in love with Hugh. He is the bad guy and I'm not really into them most of the time. BUT....this has the White Warlock Elara in it and the Departed (I have no idea who they really are but I'm looking forward to finding out). Even if Hugh isn't your favorite Elara is a strong independent woman with some awesome magical stuff happening and a group of people living in a castle. I'm so in this series for Elara!
Magic snapped out of Elara, lashing Hugh’s senses, a focused torrent unlike anything he’d felt before.

So Hugh and Elara end up in an arranged marriage. They both have some serious baggage and enemies out there and so it makes sense to team up as each has something the other needs. But, it isn't love at first sight and while they put on a good show when others are watching, when it is just he two of them the banter is funny and biting.
“Oh look, my skin isn’t smoking,” Hugh murmured.
“You’re overdoing it with the PDAs.”
“We’re newlyweds. If I threw you over my shoulder and dragged you into the woods, that would be overdoing it.”
The image flashed before her. “Try it. They won’t even find your bones.”
“Oh, darling, I don’t think you’ll have any trouble finding my bone.”

Seeing what happened to Hugh after Roland purged him is very interesting and like most people who have suffered a tragic loss and had their entire way of life upended he is struggling to find who he is without Roland pulling all the strings. It is a hard thing to look hard at your life and not be happy about the choices you made. He has spent the last while filling the emptiness inside with violence, alcohol and sex in no particular order. But he is trying to find a reason to climb out of the hole he is in and Elara and the people who follow her might give the Iron Dogs the one thing they've never had. A home.

Elara and the Departed. Well we only have enough time to just scratch the surface of this and I for one am excited to dig deeper. The backstory there seems like it is going to be very interesting and full of great lore and magic like only the Andrews know how to do.

Initially this was going to be one book, but why settle for one when you can have three. Yes that is right Elara and Hugh get a trilogy of their own. The good news is THREE BOOKS, the bad news is that all three of the trilogy are set before Magic Triumphs. Stop grumbling...I've read Magic Triumphs and I don't think this will be a problem since for the most part this side series is self contained. But there is a bit of a relationship jump between the end of Iron and Magic and the final Kate Daniels book, but seriously like we didn't know that is where we would eventually get to.

I'm just thankful we are getting more time in this world and my new question is who are Hugh's parents? I think I know who his mom is and if I'm right *mind fucking blown*

So to sum up

Hugh you are a serious piece of work

description

Elara you are going to drive him a little crazy and I think he probably deserves it. I love the way you 'handle' Hugh.

Bucky you are a special kind of awesome and Hugh's perfect new....horse???

Quotes are from the Beta version of the book and may not be in the final copy. Thanks to Ilona and Gordon Andrews for the opportunity to be a small part of this book.

Wow, ok. I see how this is gonna go. 4.5 STARS
Since this is the first KD book that I've encountered that doesn't have a slew of gigantic reviews,
I think that's due to it only being out for a couple of months, so I'll try to expand a little more on it.
Also, can I just note that it's been less than a month since I put down Magic Bites and I have now finished every single KD book, short, novella, anthology and spin off there is.
It's safe to say this series captured my heart.

NOW FOR THE BOOK:
Iron and Magic brings back everyone's favorite villain (well, before Roland anyway - and before the Preceptor of The Iron Dogs went a little too dark)
This book does bring Hugh into a different light, it also fills in the gaps and clears up some things about him.
Is he now a good guy? Hmm, no, not really.
But I think the point of this book is that nothing is that black and white.
Speaking of black and white... Hugh d'Ambray is not the sole star of this show.
He shares the spotlight with Elara Harper, and this book benefited greatly from the alternating POV.

Now for our White Warlock. I was worried Elara would be a damnsel, or a manic pixie dream girl, but the Andrews duo delivered a strong, powerful, stubborn, ice queen after my own heart.
Elara's main focus is the safety of her people, known as The Departed - they've split from a larger group, which they now call The Remaining, and have been moving around ever since - which brings us to the arranged marriage situation.

Hugh needs a Castle to defend his people from, and food for said people.
Elara needs someone to defend her people from The Remaining and other threats.

There's a lot about Elara we don't know yet and I'm dddyyyiiiing to find out.
Three familiar and beloved faces from KD make an appearance.
Another couple not so beloved ones show up as well.

This is a must read before Magic Triumphs comes out.
They do state this could be read as a stand alone, but I think that's pushing it.
Apparently all three Iron Covenant books happen before KD Book 10, but they're conveniently "supposed to be read" as such: IC1, KD10, IC2, IC3.
Well, if that means book 2 and 3 are next on the list, I'm down!
