This was such a whimsical read! I can't say that I liked it more than the shatter me trilogy, but it's also COMPLETELY different than the SM trilogy. The writing was everything. Can Tahereh Mafi teach me how she does it? I'm jealous of her craft! The one thing that I had a major issue with in this book is that the world of furthermore is HECKA confusing. Like, I'm still questioning it. I feel like every 5 pages we'd learn about a new rule or a new weird aspect of the world and I'd be left feeling confused. At the same time, I almost feel like she wanted it to be that way. Furthermore might be something that you're not supposed to fully understand. I just didn't feel like it was a strong point in this story. Overall though, I really enjoyed this book! (Full video book review to come!)

Ik vond dit een leuk boek, waar ik echt doorheen ben gevlogen. In het begin was ik bang dat ik het niet zo leuk zou vinden dat de hoofdpersonages zo jong zijn, maar hier heb ik gedurende het verhaal gelukkig weinig last van gehad.
Het boek las lekker weg en ik vond de schrijfstijl ook erg leuk. Ik vond het leuk dat het verhaal soms als het ware door een derde/verhalenverteller werd verteld.
Het boek voelt echt alsof je met de verhalenverteller bij een kampvuur zit. De verhalenverteller vertelt het verhaal zo boeiend dat je even de wereld om je heen vergeet en je dus echt met de personages van het verhaal mee leeft. Alleen af en toe word je even uit het verhaal gerukt omdat de verhalenverteller een korte persoonlijke noot toevoegt, dat is dan ook het moment dat je je weer realiseert dat je naar een verhaal zit te luisteren.
Kortom, ik heb erg genoten van dit verhaal en de schrijfstijl. Hopelijk kan ik binnenkort snel aan het volgende deel beginnen.

This was an ok read, I listened to the audio book on my way to St.Louis. The narrator has a very nice voice but the book itself was rather boring. There was a couple of interesting things like Alice herself I thought was very cool concept where her homeland celebrates the magic of color and she is colorless. Also I thought Oliver's magical talent of persuasion was very cool (also a little heart breaking!) and they were both pretty likable characters in general I felt. I liked the idea of Furthermore being chaos magic and Ferenwood using their magic to make a dependable society.
I feel like they missed an opportunity to make a cool villain or evil organization/cult for an antagonist because in Furthermore they eat flesh of creatures and people in order to get magic (which is super rad. I love that!) but I feel if they had an main antagonist plus the uncertainty of a chaos world would really make a more interesting journey.
This was pretty good, There was enough cool ideas to keep me interested. The ending is begging for a sequel which I probably would pick up! ~Ashley

Echt een super schattig verhaal over moed en dapper zijn, en jezelf accepteren. En de schrijfstijl van Tahereh Mafi is zo mooi! Ook echt petje af voor de vertaling, ik denk dat die niet makkelijk geweest is met de vele woordspelingen, maar het is heel goed gelukt.

If you listen to writers talk they discuss an element in a story called 'voice'. I think 'voice' is a little hard to explain, but to me, it's who the character really is jumping off the page. In this case, Alice, the main character, in Furthermore is a precocious 12-year-old girl but she doesn't passively tell others what to do - she is out dancing, searching, screaming, barely putting on her clothes, and wishing for more than she's been allotted. Alice (reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland) has fabulous 'voice'.
The second 'voice' in this book that takes center stage is the omniscient author. This voice gives us little asides like 'dear friend', or 'I didn't want to tell you', or 'Oliver Says I'm Terrible At Chapter Headings'. It's been used in a charming way and not over-done, so I was very pleased.
Oliver is a pickle of a boy: he lies, he manipulates others, did I mention he lies? So, why do we like him? He's insecure and actually wants to do good. In Alice, he finds the friend that he needed.
The world building is colorful, rich, daring, and nutters. From a ruler that measures the time you're allowed to have while traveling, to origami foxes that might accidentally have your arm turn to paper and get ripped off, to houses made of large eggs (we no idea how large the creature is that laid them), you are bound to be entertained. There were moments that felt reminiscent of The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Furthermore is strange and wonderful.
In conclusion, I believe you will want more of Furthermore and even more.
If you love Furthermore try The Marvelous Adventures of Gwenolyn Gray by B. A. Williamson and Iron Hearted Violet by Kelly Barnhill.

Middle grade isn’t my favorite, but I’m a big fan of Tahereh Mafi and so i enjoyed this. There were so many quotes in this that i really loved, I just love Mafi’s writing.
-> “Don’t talk to strangers, Mother had always said—especially strange men. Being afraid meant it was okay to forget your manners. If you’re afraid, you never have to be nice. Do you understand?”
-> “Mother often said that she could never be bothered to understand why Alice did the things she did, and now, more than ever, Alice thought never being bothered was a very lazy way to love someone.”
