I had big expectations for this and Carry On, and I was just underwhelmed. It just wasn’t an interesting read to me, and perhaps that’s because I’m not as excited by fantasy as a used to be; but I also felt like there wasn’t a lot of character progression - it was just all plot progression. I wanted to care more about Simon and Baz’s relationship, but there wasn’t a lot of reason to care.

4 stars ⭐️. While I didn't enjoy this as much as book one (which was expected), I think it did its job as a sequel in answering the question of "what happens next?."

This book was fun and filled with antics, but it was also tackled the intensity of Simon's life in limbo after book one, and Baz's identity as a vampire. And I really enjoyed how RR presented their journeys to us (even their rough romantic patch).

okay I wasn't gonna buy book 3 but now I kinda need to

It’ll make you laugh.
It’ll make you cry.
It’ll make you scream.
It’ll break your heart.

This storyline isn't worth 5 stars but I love the characters SO much they have my entire heart. So that's where the rating comes from and also I can't wait for the final book, lord please give me snowbaz PLEASE

Uggghhhhhhhh
Ugggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Uuuughgjgggggffffff

There were a few gorgeous lines in this book, especially near the end, that reminded me why I love Carry On so much *and* made me waaaant to tip this rating into three stars. But alas, those good lines were not enough to make up for....

1) the fact that most of the tension could have been resolved with A SINGLE CONVERSATION. One! One convo! That’s suuuuch lazy storytelling ugghfjgkgkskal I hate it

2) the impetus for the action (“agatha’s in trouble, let’s to go America!”) is bizarre filler and most of the book is also bizarre filler. This book literally feels like a placeholder to get to the book three that no one knew existed until juuuust now (which: the fact that it begins with that “epilogue” plus the publishing date getting bumped from 2020 to 2019 kinda suggests that the third book plot IS the one she reeeeally wants to get to, but she needed some sort of intermediary action to set up book three, so the publisher pushed to split it in two and give more room to this secondary subplot? I mean, I have no idea, but It sucks that that’s how the book reads).

3) fake love triangles that could be resolved with, again, a simple conversation, are dumb and lazy.

4) it’s a good idea to explore PTSD in chosen one narratives! Everyone has written and/or read so much fanfiction to that effect! It’s important! But your characters need to carry over at least some of their defining traits instead of becoming stock cardboard caricatures of themselves because that’s.....lazy and dumb

5) .....Dr Wellbelove could’ve removed Simon’s wings.....this whole time? Buddy.

Will I read the third book? Yes. Will I feel resentful the entire time because a) beginning your book with an epilogue that implies a major character death and b) ending on suuuuch a stupid sentence are both shitty ways to force people to keep reading? Y E S

Sometimes you have to write one kinda bad book to work through your own issues and get over your anxiety and write what you REALLY want to write in the form of book three, but damn. It’s a shame when you have to sacrifice good characters to get there.

Okay and also because I feel like I’m being MEAN there were several things I quite liked, especially some of the world-building stuff and literally everything about Baz at all times things and places, bless. He is SUCH a good boy. I juuuuust wish such a good character could have had the plot and support from the existence of other good characters that he deserves, ugghhhh

I enjoyed book 2 even more than book 1! I loved "Carry On" for its riffs off of fanfictionisms/YA fantasy tropes, but "Wayward Son" steps out from the shadows of parody/critique & shines as something completely its own. I loved how this book expanded the world and magic system it had established (SO cool) and especially the picture it paints of magical America. Really hope a third book is coming soon!
