Ever wonder what happens to the Chosen One after he fulfills his mission? Simon Snow has defeated the Humdrum, and it cost him nearly everything - his father figure, his magic, his purpose. Now while Baz and Penelope are flourishing in uni, Simon is struggling with how to live a life he never thought he'd have. His current solution is to sit on the couch drinking cider and eating chips until he works up enough courage to dump Baz who he's pretty sure is only still with him out of pity. Before he gets the chance, Penelope decides they are all going on holiday, a road trip across America. Will the open road and blue skies be the cure-all for Simon? Not quite. . .A vampire cult, a clingy Normal, and other craziness ensues.
My heart ached for Simon and Baz throughout this book. You see both sides of the relationship, the love and doubt experienced by both characters, and you long desperately to fix it. Those emotions combined with the fast-paced action made for a solid second installment. Book three can't get here fast enough!

Things I liked:
- Basilton Grimm-Pitch (of course)
- how realistically Simon's depression was handled
- Baz&Simon's realationship (or the lack of it - that no matter what happens they are so sure about the love they feel for each other)
Things I didn't like:
- the story itself (I didn't dislike it, I just didn't care at all)
- Agatha - I hoped I won't meet her ever again, but I guess I just can't get rid of her
- how the tone is so different from Carry On
Which is sad, because Carry On is one of my all time favourite books.
Of course I will read the next one(s), but I like to pretend Carry On is a standalone and these are fanfictions.

I enjoyed it, but I truly can't recall everything that happened in it, or even what the ending was, so it must not have been that fantastic. I did like that it began where a series ended-- that was refreshing.
“There is no end. Bad things happen, and then they stop, but they keep on wreaking havoc inside of people.”
What happens to the heroes of the story AFTER they save the world? @rainbowrowell ‘s Wayward Son tells us exactly that. After Simon, Penelope and Baz saved the world in Carry On , they tried to go on as though nothing had changed. But everything had. And as they struggle to figure out how they fit in the world and with each other, evil comes knocking.
YA Fantasy. No spice. Happy medicine for your heart. An utter delight and I can’t wait to read the next one.

I really enjoyed this! I reread Carry On before starting Wayward Son to refresh my memory of the characters and their motivations. This book is a great take on the trope of well what happens after the happily ever after? My favorite part of this book is the humor, there were so many moments where I found myself smiling and laughing. I loved seeing more of Agatha in this. I really liked her and understood where she was coming from in Carry On and it was nice to more of her character in Wayward Son. I also loved the American Vampires! Las Vegas as a Vampire stronghold was great. The differences between magical creatures and the way magic worked in America was so interesting to read. Shepard was a great new character, he was so earnest and optimistic. I loved his attitude about exploring and meeting new magical people. The end to set up the third book felt a little odd and rushed. I think it could have been fine without that cliffhanger-like ending but I loved the rest of the book and can't wait for book three.
As much as I loved Carry On, this book should have been far longer than it actually was. The problems at the beginning of the book are still present by the end, absolutely nothing is resolved and there’s just slightly more problems.
Simon was weirdly written all book, and his relationship with Baz felt like an odd step back that’s not resolved in the slightest. I understand that it’s one thing to come to terms with a sexuality you didn’t know you were, or even maybe be questioning, but when it doesn’t get addressed all book it just feels like stereotypical queer suffering. They don’t even talk about it. They’re literally in a relationship and don’t talk about this massive thing that’s clearly eating away at both of them? Literally ruining their entire relationship and making the both of them upset? Not like their characters at all to be honest.
It was just a strange, almost interlude of a book. I did enjoy the plot, but I feel like there should have been 100 or so more pages. Also, what was the ending anyway? I’m still not sure what happened. Not sure why Agatha is even that relevant, and really not sure what the writing of Penelope was all book honestly. I did however enjoy the addition of Shepard as a character, I do like him.
I’ll wait for the next book but have to say it disappointed me. It feels as if this should have been a side story rather than another book, unless were going to end up with four. This could easily have been something else, or it easily could have been fan fiction. I can’t decide.

3⭐️ for found family besties, magic stuff, and morally ambiguous vampire antagonists. Really enjoyed the addition of Shepherd. Overall these books are very surface level as far as attachment goes - they have potential to dive much deeper and really grab you but despite the somewhat heavy topics/events, the vibes remain very unemotional (u less it’s a time emotions are explicitly talked about, not really feeling anything so much as being told)
