This Winter is such a realistic and serious yet cute take on the holidays. I loved it. The portrayal of mental illness felt so real, as did the characters. Tori, Charlie, and Nick were as loveable as always and I appreciated the little cameo of Oliver too - he’s so sweet! Not to mention cute little Henry the dog. It is definitely one of the best novellas ever.

This Winter is a nice side story to the comics of heartstopper. You really get to see what happened during Christmas and how much it not only affected Charlie, but his siblings as well. Hearing the things Charlie went through is sad, but helps you connect with him even more. His support system of Tori and Nick is amazing and creates a lovely story.

I liked this novella for the glimpses of Nick, Charlie, and Tori (and at Christmas no less)! But I feel like Alice’s strengths lie in her graphic novels because she is able to emote so much with so few words. And here I don’t know that the words serve her the way I would like.

In the way that Heartstopper is almost effortless to read and become entranced by, This Winter was clunky and not as compelling. I think the split narrative across 3 narrators as well as the subject matter, made This Winter a potentially more frustrating/less interesting story to read.
