I really liked this novella. It was fun, and I liked all the side characters in her family.

Maybe I'm a little bit biased with this one:

1) I adore this series already and reading this novella has made me want to go back and reread the series, to catch glimpses of Emmett and his mate and also to mentally prepare myself for Shield of Winter.

2) The heroine is a curvy brunette called Ria. Seriously. Suffice to say it's rare to see my name in print (one awful example in movies - a mouthy prostitute in Crank 2 besmirches my good name) so I was pleased my namesake was such a delight.

Loved it. I hope more of the other short stories are released as ebooks.

I love this series and initially rated this much higher just because I was happy to be back reading this world. However, this novella is pretty trash. Firstly, what is this title? Most of the titles, while TERRIBLE, at least make a sort of sense. This is just ridiculous. Secondly, Ria has JUST experienced an attempted rape, but Emmett still doesn’t STOP WHEN SHE SAYS STOP. Instead he wheedles and pressures and it’s all okay because she likes it. No. Just absolutely no. Thirdly, and this is not unique to this story, Singh writes the most vanilla, man-on-top, penis-in-vagina sex. No matter how skillfully she writes these scenes, good lord, do the changelings not know about oral?!? After 20+ books, I’ve started skipping the sex scenes because they aren’t the fun part of this series.

Thought I had read this but was pleased that I hadn't. I love these books, and finding a new one is a real treat. Can't wait for June when the next one in the series comes out. Love them all.

I loved Emmett with his alpha and protective qualities. I also loved Ria because she could handle herself, especially at the beginning of the novella. This was a great start to the Psy/Changeling series.

Standalone or Part of Series: It’s part of the Psy/Changeling series, but this could be read as a standalone.

Would I recommend this novella? Yes. If you are looking at reading Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changeling series, Beat of Temptation and Whisper of Sin would be the perfect start.

TW: attempted rape

I enjoyed this quite a lot and now I'm 20% bitter that Emmett doesn't really appear in the big books because he's hot????? but then again so is everyone in DarkRiver???

anyhoo, when I grow up I want to be Ria's popo. WOMAN PARTS!!!!

#0.5 Beat of Temptation: ★★★★☆ | 4 stars
#0.75 Whisper of Sin: ★★★★☆ | 4 stars

This was sweet short story about Ria (Lucas's administrative assistant) and how she met her mate Emmett (a DarkRiver soldier).

Three Thoughts:
1. Emmett is possessive and swoony. Exactly what you'd expect from a leopard changeling. But, I also loved how Ria refused to stand down. She gave as good as she got.
2. Ria's grandmother is absolutely the star of the show. And, her dropping that bomb in the middle of dinner is giving main character energy.
3. Loved all the cameos from our favorite DarkRiver changelings.

Though this story takes place 7 years before Slave to Sensation, I would recommend reading it after it - or even after Visions of Heat (Book 2). While the story can stand on its own, I think it's more easily understand when you already have a framework for how the world works - especially with regards to interactions between Changelings and Psy.
