i have been trying to be less liberal and more judicious with what qualifies a 5 star read for me but this really seems to hit the mark. i don't know i just feel as if this was so so so well done and enjoyable and just all around fucking lovely. i think that it was the kind of queer high school romance i wish i read as a kid. it was like cognizant of parental struggles and homophobia without harping on it. it didn't seem as if it was playing to an unfamiliar audience or overexplaining things, it just left them as they are. it was nuanced and delt with female friendship in a really lovely way. hani pissed me off at times but i think that is really because i have been and am many ways am hani. her struggles to get the backbone to stand up to her friends of a lifetime is something i can heavily identify with. i think that overall this book was so incredibly well done and i had fun reading it which is an even more important part. i rarely found myself distracted or trying to put the book down out of bordem. and as i think of the flaws of the book they are truly just like flaws in me that i saw in the characters that i didnt love seeing. so. i think its not like literary fiction magic but it is, to me, excellent. 5 stars. and fuck u aisling and dee u stupid dumbys. and fuck u principal Gallagher rot !

feeling like i need to read the henna wars now
seriously this was so cute - and also very three dimensional with vibrant cultural imagery and differences in faith and politics and ideas addressed in such a great way. took me right back to ireland too - some of the things mentioned were so uniquely european and i ate it up
