Diese süßen zuckermäuse, Hach war das schön.
Vllt ein wenig zu wenig Romance.

Whoops I accidentally finished the whole book in a day! Great comfort read.

Cute and fun and gay and great!

The story is structured in a predictable-yet-comforting way, really leans into the tropes in a way that lets them shine. I love how Adiba Jaigirdar includes the Bengali and Irish in conversations. The romance is cute and fun and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the portrayal of Ishu’s relationship with her sister. <3

Quotes:

“Hani declares she’s going to drop me home like we’re some antiquated heterosexual couple and not two queer teens who don’t even have access to a car.”

“All I know is that it feels like I finally have someone on my side. Even if it’s my annoying older sister.”

Cute queer ya romance. No homophobia from adults.

I used to have a friend, who thought every man on the planet was evil – men they had never met, men who had never harmed anyone. Because of my friend’s personal traumas, they found every man irredeemable, solely based on their sex.

This novel is that friend. Only that it doesn’t hold grudges over men but over white people. Every white person in this book is portrayed as racist, cowardly, judgemental, and so on. Meanwhile, the Brown main characters are incredibly judgemental themselves and keep making wild racial assumptions (what was that bit about white people thinking it’s “blasphemous” to sit on the floor?) without their holier-than-thou attitudes being questioned.

Simply put, this book is the most hypocritical novel I’ve read. I welcome the author to read books by white people, who aren’t American – why were these “Irish” characters so American-coded is beyond me – because they clearly don’t know a thing about “white culture” beyond the most stereotypical American tv shows. It’s not all Riverdale out there.
