Ever since she was rescued from a life of petty crime, hacker Murdock has followed Hark and her crew of con artists on a string of heists. When a failed heist lands them in prison, the women are sacrificed to a rogue warship called Justice; home to criminals from all edges of the galaxy, the ship is ruled by AI while its inhabitants struggle to maintain a civilized society. Though the women are determined to find a way off the ship, Justice has other plans for Murdock's hacker skills. Murdock has always relied on Hark for direction, but this time the mastermind is out of ideas. Murdock will need to figure out an escape plan... or else give into Justice's offer for redemption.

This is a fast paced sci-fi thriller; the first chapter throws us right into the story and from there it's constant action. Murdock's narrative introduces each of the other characters while the world building is organically shown through her eyes. I loved the supporting characters and the queer romance subplot. The world has dystopian vibes and I enjoyed the exploration of the ship and the society built within it. Overall, this was a fun read! This is the first Emily Strutskie book I've read and I definitely want to read more.

(Light romance, closed door, no smut)

Thank you to Del Rey for the advanced copy.

A bit more YA than I like my adult sci-fi books and the ending felt rushed but overall I enjoyed the read

Take Ocean’s 8 except they didn’t pull it off and ended up in a 300-year old galactic penal colony. Murdock’s is a delightful perspective to experience this book from, and the idea of a rogue AI taking prisoners to prop up a long dead empire is creatively engineered. I gave it a 3.5 rounded up- it’s an enjoyable read and well executed, without taking itself too seriously or dragging.

This book started off slow to me, hard to connect with the characters. But the more I read, the more I couldn't put it down. It ramped up with such wild abandon that I'm fighting the urge to start it again immediately! Can't wait for more.
