Such a unique storyline. Part historical fiction, part story within story, and part tracking down war criminal. Crazy how things woven together.

This book was very good, but suuuper depressing and hard to read at times as all holocaust books are. It had the usual things I like about Jodi Picoult's books including the multiple narrators and a "surprise" ending that I guessed from the beginning. But I was also pleasantly surprised that none of it took place in a courtroom and was not filled with the usual profanity.

This was a wonderful and terrible book! Wonderful because it is well written and the story is fantastically told, terrible because of the subject matter (not really terrible but emotional for sure) I loved it! Jodi Picoult is a fantastic author and really makes you feel what the characters feel.

“I don’t believe in God, but...I do believe in people. In their strength to help each other, and to thrive in spite of the odds. I believe that the extraordinary trumps the ordinary any day. I believe that having something to hope for, even if it’s just a better tomorrow, is the most powerful drug on this planet.”

This has easily been a five-star book from the first few hours of reading it. Jodi Picoult’s books are always well-researched and intensely engaging, and this is no exception. At this point, it can seem difficult to write a WWII book that is unique from the many others that have been written, but this story made me feel like I was hearing it all for the first time.

This was hard to get into. But once I hit part II, it moved along faster. Ending was good - ended the way it should have.

I wanted to give this 5 stars so bad because the last half of the book was so amazing.
What a beautifully written story about two individuals who have lived through the holocaust on both sides.
The beginning was hard to listen to, because I really didn’t enjoy the main character or understand how parts of the book really related to anything else. The Jesus bread, why is that even in the story?
Sage attend a grief support group where she meets Josef. Josef ask her to kill him because of the work he did as a nazi. We then go through all of his stories and in the process we also hear the stories of Sages grandma who is a holocaust surviver.
It is one of those truly hunting parts of history, but one we need to continue to remember so we do not forget and never repeat.
