This has becomes favorite Picoult book. Mostly because the ending is worthy of the story. I enjoyed every bit of the character development, storytelling and historical perspective. Too bad it took me so long to finish it!
thank goodness that’s over…i was so so so bored. the premise is amazing, right up my alley, but it drags on sooo much that i was skimming after 40% after convincing myself to not dnf it. i should’ve dnf’d. also all the different fonts used bothered me so much and honestly made it hard to read. i wish i skipped this one…
Excellent book! Probably one of my favorites of Picoult's. The story of Minka is heartbreaking, devastating, and encouraging all at the same time.
This book is amazing. Once you really get into it, it’s hard to put down. This book made me laugh and cry. It’s beautifully written and the story is incredible.
I know all of Jodi Picoults books are well researched and I love that she put her sources at the end bc now I want to read them too. I know that everything that happened in this book is probably something that actually did or at least could have happened during the Holocaust.
I don’t love that she killed him in the end. Especially since she thought he was Reiner. That man was evil and I know Josef was “good” for most of his life but come on… he deserves punishment. Having him turn out to be Franz was amazing. I knew there’d be some twist at the end and I figured it’d be that he’s not Reiner bc they don’t have the same blood type. His last words to her and her grandmother being the same is pretty cool too. Jodi Picoult is such a good writer.
Love the little romance we get but I don’t love that she was with a married man originally. Cheating is always yucky and I'm glad other characters reminded her of that. Most of the characters were great (main girl gets docked for cheating and what she did at the end… and obvs all the Nazis are shit). I highly recommend this book, especially if you’re into first hand survivor stories.

I'm giving this 4 stars but I do have very mixed feelings about it. It is not a book that I will be recommending lightly as I found it very difficult to read the harrowing and detailed sections on the treatment of the Jews. These chapters are so well described and are the best parts of the book but it's definitely not a light read. It is upsetting, as a book about the holocaust should be.
On the other hand we have the chick lit, modern day cringe worthy story line... Blah. The usual predictable rubbish :( and so disappointing.
There is also a bizarre third story running through the book which is supposed to reflect the moral dilemmas and forgiveness topic. I found it a very odd story and it didn't seem like the whole thing gelled together very well to me.
I wouldn't say I enjoyed the book, the holocaust sections are very upsetting (as they should be), the modern day parts are rubbish, the third story is weird. Overall I'm glad to have read it for more knowledge and insight into the history and found this a great book for that purpose.
