This heartbreaking story is actually the first book I’ve ever read to give me nightmares. And I say that as a compliment. Picoult’s ability to bring Nazi camps to life is entirely haunting, and it clearly stayed on my mind each night after I finished my reading for the day. This was a very long read, and because of how dark it was, I had to force myself to read it slowly to avoid becoming too sad (lol).

This would easily have been a 5 star read for me, but I’ll be honest: the modern day story felt like a drag at times and I could not stand the forced romantic thread with Sage and Leo. A story like this doesn’t need romance at all. Their respective chapters felt like a chore to read…meanwhile the two Minka chapters, which are arguably the largest chunk of the book, were so easy to devour.

This is a great read for anyone who loves historical fiction and wants a thought provoking look at World War II and the concepts of morality in times of war and good versus evil. Highly recommended.

Another one of Picoult's top stories for me. Good mesh of history and fiction - you can truly see her characters.
