...the fuck?
Yes I consumed this in one sitting. It's action-packed and gory. But it is VERY imperfect in terms of my taste and the expectations I had for it. The story was repetitive and nonsensical at points (and not in just the fun way). The ending was very anticlimactic.
If you like gore or survival fiction, you'll have fun but otherwise give this a skip.
(Ghosts are boring, fuck that noise. Give me a weird creature or a cult any day but not forest ghosts?!!!!)

I didn’t think it was terrible, I ended up listening to it in one day but it wasn’t great. Nothing is really answered, a lot of repetitiveness for very little pay off. It would have been nice to have some sort of lore for the land other than people go in and never get out. Except for when it decides to let you out?
Characters were 1 dimensional. Motivations were wishy washy ie Dylan needing to climb the wall more than anything then all of sudden nothing til the very end . Gore seemed unnecessary and just there to be sensastionalist. There are better books in this genre.

When four ambitious rock climbers find a new rock face in the Kentucky wilderness, they set off to be the first to climb it and research the flora and fauna for their thesis projects. Seven months later.. only three mutilated bodies are found and one is missing. What happened to them? Was it cannibals? Were they murdered? Or was it something more sinister?
This may be my first wilderness/survival horror book but it won’t be my last. What a fantastic debut by Kiefer! I wasn’t sure about the start where we discover the bodies but that set up was actually perfect for this story. The atmosphere added such a great element to this read, I felt transported. The gore was awesome and the tension buildup was perfectly executed.
The Ruins meet The Descent with a bit of Sodergren character depth. What a blast, it continued to grow with me as I sat with it long after reading, 4.5✨!
