My sister kindly loaned me this book, despite the fact that neither of us are lending libraries. I would have never purchased a graphic novel, so I am glad that she happened to have this and I could mark it off my want to read list. This is actually the only graphic novel I have ever read in my life, as the format just does not interest me. This particular graphic novel was created by a former classmate of Jeffrey Dahmer. I think people sometimes forget about the fact that notorious folks were once teens in school and people interacted with them on a level that wasn't necessarily congruent with their sinister activities or criminal case. I appreciated the perspective of this author.
This was pretty much what I expected, the tale of Jeffrey Dahmer and the little steps that he made towards becoming one of the nastiest serial killers ever. It also shows the little steps taken to isolate him by “friends” and family. It’s the only time I’ve ever seen him painted as sympathetic, and interesting enough the guy who wrote it tells you “maybe things could have been different.”
the disturbing story of dahmer before he became a murderer. it is well written & fully researched. the art is unappealing imo, but then, the topic is as well.
i actually didn't know too much about him going in - just that he was a serial killer. but this was recommended to me so i read it.
backderf makes a point of how dahmer is not to be idolized or sympathized with, and goes into detail about high school culture in the 70s and how it contributed to dahmer's downward spiral. i appreciated this; the reverence some people develop towards serial killers when they're shown other parts of their lives is severely messed up and i'm glad this book doesn't encourage that.
