Not overly graphic or explicit … just dark. The artwork definitely captured the disturbing and haunting teen-hood of Jeffrey Dahmer.

Haunting. Backderf did a great job allowing the read to have sympathy but not empathy for Dahmer.

Well, that was just as rough as expected. Beyond the necessarily superficial profile of the killer himself as a kid (the author mostly kept his distance and so could only say so much), the author provides insight into the weirdness of middle/high school lives and hints at long term impacts of family trauma on already troubled youth. I picked up and read this book since I enjoyed Backderf’s “Trashed” earlier this week. The author’s linear style of drawing with where’s Waldo-esque details is captivating and easy to read.

Sometimes comics lack a good storyline, trusting the art would be enough for the reader to enjoy. What I appreciate in My Friend Dahmer is that Backderf really worked on creating a compelling story for the book, extensively researching the available public material about Dahmer. He also interviewed a lot of people from his hometown, and evaluated the accounts from those people before putting it in the book.
Overall it was very sad to see the progress on how the ignored and extremely lonely kid turns into one of the most notorious serial killers in the US. Also, if you don't know who Jeffrey Dahmer is, I recommend going over his Wikipedia page before picking this up to give the book a bit of a back story.

Absolutely fascinated by this book. I literally have trouble talking about how much I loved this book...people give me weird looks. But just read the book and keep it to yourself, I guess?

What a tricky read. Here, Backderf humanizes the childhood of a man who became a monster.

We see the many ways in which society failed to help a young man who desperately needed it. Still, the choices that this man made are his and his alone. It's a sad, tragic story.
