I love Jason Todd. So I loved this book. I guess that's pretty much what you need to know. If you like Red Hood or Arsenal and their shenanigans, you'll enjoy this story.

This is the first thing I picked up in the New 52 from DC and of course I don't pick it up until after the decide to launch a New New 52 because being a fan of comics is a frustrating thing. I don't know why I picked this title up over anything else, Red Hood, or Jason Todd is only my third favorite Robin and so a Nightwing or Teen Titles title with Dick or Tim would have made more sense but I picked this one up last night. (I know third favorite Robin sounds low but really there have been at least Robins counting Carrie Kelley from Dark Knight who is my least favorite so he is in the top half. That was more information than needed. Anyway I was intrigued by idea of these three characters together. I really like the direction of Jason Todd and Starfire but I really don't like the Arsenal/Roy Harper character but it isn't enough to ruin the book for me. In fact he is probably a better foil to Todd with this version of the character than the traditional Harper version. All in all I liked Lodbell's book, it was quick, stylish, and fun, exactly what I wanted.

  • I really want to like this more than I do, bacause I adore Jason Todd, but it just doesn't live up to its potential. Lobdell clearly using the characters as mouth pieces more often than drawing in established character traits.
  • I like the general art style, but every woman is either an impossible hour glass or a hideous abomination and a couple somehow manage to be both. The sexism gets marginally less rampant towards the end, but never enough to outweigh Starfire's ridiculous suit.
  • The Jay Roy dynamic is interesting, bonding over being the 'failed' sidekicks, but Kori is absolutely a sexy lamp.

I've been pondering this book for the past couple days, trying to figure out what I think of it. What struck me the most is what a big deal was made over Kori sleeping with both Jason and Roy. And how ridiculous her costume is. Her boots are literally 80% of it. But back to the issue that's bugging me the most.

The repetition of this fact felt forced. Like Lobdell (via Roy) was saying "wow, look what a slut Kori is, but it's ok because she's proud of it so that makes me pro feminism!". I'm the first to admit that I get touchy about things like this. I try to not get on my soap box too much, but when this fact is really the only thing I remember two days after reading it...

I've already got the rest of the books, so I'll read them. I really hope this was a one off and there isn't a "Kori is the team bicycle" theme running through the series. I'm perfectly happy for Kori to take her pleasure where and when she wants to. I'm just not ok with Lobdell harping on it through other characters.

I'm am getting tired of these action comics and one fight right on top of another. There is some good characterization going on. Starfire - really, another boob character - over it. This is so convoluted. Red Hood used to work with Batman or something. I don't even know. They are hunting evil. I did like the art. This is a mess in my opinion. I think this is simply not for me.

The graphics are a bit all over the place tbh but the characters and their dynamics are really likable. I can't wait to continue this series and to get to know them more.
