Another great audio book by Hiaasen. I don't know if I want to read him anymore. These are so much more entertaining.

Didn't really go anywhere. Character development at a foetal level, most if not all of them seeming like vague, recycled composites of folks from the Hiaasen novels I remember reading in the past. The "self-proclaimed queen of lost causes" part sounds interesting and edgy but it didn't actually mean anything as far as I could see.
Somehow, despite very little actually happening, the novel still manages to seem extremely slow. I think I need to re-read Stormy Weather or something, since I definitely don't remember his other books having this problem...
I'm sure the Floridian wilderness is a wonderful place, though.

August 2024. Originally read in 2015. Remembered very little of the plot. Summer comfort reading as I recover from shoulder surgery. Michael is really enjoying Hiaasen, so I am reading them along with him. Fun!

This was a great audio book.

I didn't like it as much as I enjoyed his others.

If you can get past the obviously forced lengths Hiaasen goes to in order to make his characters unnaturally bizarre, then you'll enjoy their antics and the convoluted plots. It's as if he thinks up unnatural actions and then pastes characters onto them, hoping that if he stitches enough oddball antics together he'll have a fleshed out character. Instead of doing it the other way around, which is how it should be. It's strange for the sake of strange and not a natural outgrowth of the character. Donald Westlake and Elmore Leonard are the masters of the right way to do and they make it look effortless and easy. But still, Hiaasen is entertaining.
