This was a really great start to this series. I really enjoyed it, but it's starting to feel a little formulaic when compared with 'The Others' series. I'm hoping for good things in the next book. I'd like to get some other surprises or see her maybe start a new series! 4 out of 5 stars.

As a long-time Anne Bishop fan, I am disappointed to say that this book was ridiculously boring. The characters were two dimensional, from heroes to villains. The main character -- or was she merely a prop? -- had no personality beyond her fragility. Blah. It was almost a DNF and return.

I have fallen absolutely in love with the world created by Anne Bishop in The Others series. Taking a step away from The Courtyard this story takes us to a small town where recently divorced Vicki is trying to pick up her life and run a retreat for humans and Others alike. The town welcomes her but when tragedy and mystery surround her, things start to fall apart. The town's residents want Vicki to succeed but can they protect her from her ex and his secret society ready to kick her out of her new home? And will Vicki and the other town's residents survive the backlash of the Elders? A great read I couldn't put down. A little sad that there was not a lot of interaction with The Courtyard, I love those characters, but this new collection was just as entertaining.

I love this book but the app says I'm currently reading it when I'm not, so I'm leaving a review to try to see if that moves it out of this list. Again, great book

I read Lake Silence again to get ready for the newest book in the series, Crowbones. It's been less than two years since the last time that I read this, but I somehow completely changed my mind about it. Apparently I liked the characters when I first read the book, but this time they seemed immature and kind of annoying. I also don't like that the characters are so similar to the original cast, because they feel like cheap knockoffs instead of characters that can stand on their own.

I don't think I'm going to continue with the World of the Others series. I still love the original series though.

Original review:

Lake Silence is a nice read. I adore The Others series, so I loved reading more about the world. I liked the characters a lot. I do wish that there was more crossover with the characters from The Others books, but maybe that's too much to ask. Overall, this was really fun.

I liked the multiple points of view in this book, but I didn't like that Vicki's chapters were in 1st person perspective and everyone else's were in 3rd. It threw me off a bit. I'd rather the author just pick one or the other.

Relisten
Loooooove this world! Vicki was cool and I wanted to hug her for her trauma that caused so much issues. 'Damn that ex of hers.

The others were such sweethearts

First try
I really love this series! And sure I had my doubts, I had fallen in love with the books and now they ended and we got a spin off. I was unsure, but I did not need to be. It was just as good.

It took me a while to warm up to Meg in the previous series, but here I liked everything at once. But then I was settled in this world and it was like meeting new friends. It also helped that I listened to it and I have said it before, everything is better in audio ;)

Vicky was unsure, had anxieties, was not comfortable around men and just wanted to build a new life. Oh that scum of an ex husband, I wanted him to be eaten!! She was a kind person who deserved better. And now she had renovated a dump settled on her in the divorce and wanted some guests at her resort. But oh uh, instead she has a murder on her hand. Fingers pointing to her and luckily, her being kind and all, she has help.

The bookseller in town is a good friend. The woman at the lodging house is also a nice friend (and what on earth was up with some things there?). And most of all The Others. Aggie from the crow guard was a sweetie. Who wouldn't like the crows and their obsession with shinies. And there are Others too. I do love the Others, I want them to eat all bad people.

Ugh, humans! We really are monkeys who should have stayed in the trees. They are so stupid. Like omg, The Others, The Others! They killed and destroyed cities in the previous book. One think humans should have learned a lesson but noooo. They should all be eaten.

Oh what a ride! I did not want to stop listening! It is good when I take every chance I can to listen, even stay up late to listen.

A great stand alone in this amazing world. More now please.

Narrator
She was great too. I liked all her voices and accents. Her spooky voice was indeed creepy.

Listened to Jan 2020
As great as before. Alexandra Harris is amazing
All humans should be wiped out, mofos

A fantastic entry in a fantastic universe. This is a new story in the universe set up by the previous five novels and doesn’t miss a beat.

Set after the events of the first part of the books the story continues in a remote town completely owned by the Terra Indigine

Great pacing, excellent characters and well worth checking out with the other books
