This review is for the overall series.
I know I'm a few years late to the bandwagon, but I just graduated from college and read all of these books. First off, the books are waaaaaaaay different than the TV show. I knew a couple of spoilers from the show that never ended up occurring in the books. So if you think you know what happens, you probably don't.
The good:
1. Some of the bad things that happen to the four girls are just the consequences of their own actions. Like yes, you should be worried about the police finding out what you did. You did something terrible. Cheating in academics or on your boyfriend? What Hanna did to Madison? Yeah, that's bad. See #2.
2. The girls are "relatable", not in the sense that I'm anything like them, but in a sympathizable sense. Emily in particular is easy for me to sympathize with. You can really see how she interacts with her mental health and the people around her.
3. Each book is easy to read and moves the plot along in it's own way. I didn't think I could read 16 books, plus the two additional ones, this quickly. I can see why it was turned into a TV show; every chapter is exciting.
The bad:
1. The boys are all older and hot. In real life, most strangers are not the sexiest people you've ever seen. Granted, this book is not about real life. I do think the series could highlight how many of the boys/MEN the characters are attracted to are too old for them. The girls are in high school, for goodness sakes.
2. The chemistry between the girls and their love interests is never very deep. The relationship between the girls and Ali or between the girls and their families were developed really well, but the boyfriends? Eh.
3. So many things are mentioned in a book or two and then dropped. Hanna's bulimia just...goes away eventually. I'm not saying that's impossible, I'm just saying that's unusual.
The ugly:
Nothing too atrocious.

Well, it's finally done. The 16th book in a series that, in all honesty, should have ended on the 8th volume. After the 8th book, every plot "twist" was just a repeat of the book that came before. It was, finally, a good tie-up of a series that had become a money-grab and nothing else. The Liars were finally vindicated and Ali got fat and finally ended up in jail and the girls all lived happily ever after, seemingly unscarred by an adolescence of stalking and bullying and physical attacks and PTSD.
Hanna got married to Mike and is living happily ever after as a fashion designer in New York.
Aria is with Noel and is living happily ever after as an artist in New York.
Spencer is with Wren and is living happily ever after on the path to being a lawyer in Philadelphia.
Emily is a surfer and is living happily ever after in California.
And Ali, once again, got fat and was tossed in the psych ward and is living happily ever after, planning her revenge on the Liars.
So nothing changed. There was no finality other than the series which started as a vapid attempt at YA suspense ended with two faked deaths and no real knowledge or accurate portrayal of the legal system. But it's done, out of my system, I know all the plot "twists" that may or may not find their way into the infinitely better television show. It's like a Band-Aid I've been tugging at for years but have been too lazy to rip off because there are no redeeming characters or plot lines or themes or styles.
It's just over, and it's a weight gone from my reading list.
On to better things.

I wouldn't give this series more than 3.5 stars, but it did keep me reading until the end.
I finally finished this series. I have been reading them for over 7 years and can't believe it came to an end. Well, I wanted it to end because I think they were too many books but anyway it is a saga that I would keep in my heart.
This book ended the right way and it had so many plot twists that I couldn't stop reading.

I was reading the last chapter and all I could think about was no, no, no... This can't be happening. Not again.
But then, I read acknowledgement, which started with : "So this really and truly is the end of the PLL saga... "
But aside of that, it had been fun. Yes, it got repetitive. Yes, sometimes you could just see through what is coming next. Yes, it got unrealistic quite a few times. But still, they were fun to read. And hey, all's well that ends well.

An excellent ending to the Pretty Little Liars series. I cannot believe how long I stuck with the series and I'm glad I got through all the confusion and frustration to get to this suspenseful and satisfying conclusion. I don't know if I will read anymore Sara Shepard books (I know she has some new series and books that connect to the PLL series) but I do want to explore the TV show, which I know is different but still worth a try.
