Great prose, very poor character development and story execution. I love complicated and unlikable protagonists but there needs to be work done by the author to make that work. Felt like the author just wanted to make an entry in the genre rather than having something to say. Major flop, almost gave up halfway through.

A beautifully written modern spin on the myth of Persephone, Fruit of the Dead captures the myth's dreamy, fatalistic quality without dipping into the supernatural. Thatw way, it truly distills the essence of the story to not only adapt it to a modern setting, but to modern sensibilities and challenges, making it almost relatable. The author imbues the while narrative with the heady, dizziness of grief, obsession, intoxication.
