Ugh. Everything about this book is too much. Too much detail about the magic system crammed in everywhere. Too much explanation all the fucking time. There is no room for the reader to imagine anything when the author is constantly explaining every meaningless detail. what’s that adage about show not tell? This author needs to hear that. Stop telling me about eberythinG!! And don’t get me started on the romance between Emiko and that dumb investor guy. I only made it a quarter of the way though because this book reads so amateurish. Go publish this on fanfic.net.

thanks to tor for providing me with a copy of this book!!

this one was a slow start for me, lots of worldbuilding needed to be done and i get that but it took me a good third of the book to get invested. emiko, kamon, and freddy were standout characters for me. emiko's journey toward getting away from her violent past was heartbreaking and made even worse when she was inevitably sucked back in. kamon was LOVELY as a potential romantic lead for emiko, and i really hope that this book is laying the groundwork for them to get back together in the future. the finale of this book was really really exciting and i'm glad i stuck around for it. i'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

this book to me had similar vibes to jade city with a little more fantasy elements, and i would recommend this one to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy and/or asian mythology-based magic systems.

Within just the first few pages I could tell the prose was just not my style.

some parts were a teeny bit cringey and she also repeated details once.
the climactic final decision of sacrifice at the end wasn’t really a difficult choice like there was only one real option but she made such a big deal about not being able to give either thing up
