Scott is wallowing in self pity after he found out his girlfriend was cheating on him, drinking and watching John Cusack movies to try and numb the pain. A chance encounter with his first love Mary-Ann, brings up a lot of buried memories. She asks him to retrieve a USB stick, which has fallen into the hands of Guy, the man who his girlfriend cheated on him with.

Can he do it?

This is a quick read at just nineteen chapters perfect for a long commute or if you’ve got a long wait ahead of you.

In the beginning there is quite a bit of backstory, so it starts a little slowly but after the first few chapters you get to nitty-gritty of the story.

There was an interesting cast of characters too. I have a little soft spot for Freddie, who is sex obsessed thirteen year old with a very weird relationship with his step-mother. Although as the mother of a teenage boy, I am glad my son is nothing like him!

I didn’t much like Scott. I found him incredibly self centred and a little annoying to me but he was so realistic. As it was written in the first person I felt like he was talking to me throughout the story.

I have to be honest while the ending made sense and I did enjoy it, it left me with a few unanswered questions. Also I felt like some of the more minor characters, e.g. his ex-girlfriend Genevieve, could have done with a little bit more fleshing out but of course that’s just my opinion.

This was my first read from Jim Ody. This story had me from the beginning. It has an interesting story line that keeps you hooked! The ending had me saying "what?". A twist that I definitely was not expecting! The characters are great as well, I really think Freddie became my favorite in this one.

If you love mysteries and twists this should definitely be on your to read list. I really enjoyed Jim's writing style in this and can't wait to read more from him.

Beneath The Whispers is a story that will capture the reader fully. For a novella, it is highly entertaining whilst not losing anything I would expect from a full length novel.

Freddie is without a doubt the star of this book. He brings a certain amount of humour to the story which was pleasantly surprising as not what I was expecting but made me enjoy it even more. The camaraderie between Scott and Freddie truly is priceless and I couldn’t get enough of it.

There is an air of mystery swirling around the story. It certainly got more suspenseful as it goes along and I really had no clue how it was all going to end, of which the ending was a definite surprise and certainly one that I was not expecting!

This is a gem of a novella by an author who deserves to be highly acclaimed. It’s one I can see being read and enjoyed in many years to come by new and old fans alike. Beneath The Whispers is a definite must read if you enjoy a compelling story full of mystery and suspense with a very unexpected twist.

My thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
