Didn’t care so much for the main character but love the writing style. Not a lot happens

the premise and the writing style r good but the actual execution of the plot had me lost. I get Edie wanted to be apart of a family and I feel like a lot of the focus on the mundane was meant to like deepen like the intimacy of being apart of Eric's family or wtv but NGL it made the book really boring and I feel like a lot of points that were focused on ultimately were for nothing so much vivid description and for what. I think it was all tied together nicely but the fact that I feel like the same points could have been made which sufficiently less book takes away from the punch of it.
Graphic: Racism, Sexual content, and Drug abuse
Moderate: Child death

Absolutely sensational. Leilani's writing is evocative and enthralling, and I was mesmerized by Edie's story from start to finish. The dynamics between the characters felt refreshingly genuine and I hungered for more of Leilani's words with every page turn. I finished this book with tears in my eyes and finally let out the breath I had been holding since I began.

Leilani is a talented writer and I think Edie was a well-realized character. I didn't find the plot premise particularly engaging - it was borderline surrealism with how unrealistic a lot of the scenarios and reactions were? The relationships between characters are all quite surface level and there is plenty of plot points I would have liked to see further developed. The book highlights important issues surrounding race, but didn't examine them as deeply as I'd hoped for. I'd read future works by Leilani given her writing stands out, but this particular plot wasn't for me.
And when I am alone with myself, this is what I am waiting for someone to do to me, with merciless, deliberate hands, to put me down onto the canvas so that when I'm gone, there will be a record, proof that I was here.
