The author would have us believe that Agatha Raisin was a successful business woman, having built a PR firm from scratch. How did she do that if she is so abrasive and insensitive to everyone around her? Makes no sense. Neither does the plot of this “cozy” mystery. I figured out the victim’s great secret on page 26 (victim had been introduced on page 25). I could tell who the murderer was on page 30 (murder was introduced on page 24).
I don’t understand Agatha’s success; and I really don’t understand the success of this series. We have an unlikeable lead character, a background story that doesn’t ring true, minor characters that are nothing but caricatures, and a plot that is as see-through as window glass. I give it 1 star mostly because there were a few moments when I thought I might be interested in following this series. But Beaton was better at killing my interest in the series than she was at writing it.

Brilliant :-D
I was kind of suspicious because of the name - Agatha Raisin. Raisin?
And in the beginning, Agatha isn't that sympathetic. But now I have read the book, I like her a lot. :-D

The book started out rather slow, and the character Agatha was not very likable.
I found myself skimming a lot of the scenes and the ending was rather lackluster for my taste.
Towards the 75% mark the characters were a lot more enjoyable, but as a series starter, I'm not impressed.

I was surprised by the mediocrity of the book after all the praise it has gotten. Would have needed quite a bit editing, a lot of fluff in there. A pleasant enough read but I won't be reading more of Agatha Raisin.

i knew there was a reason why i never cared for quiche. i just have to say that British cozy mysteries have a very special place in my heart and i really wanted to like the first book in this series so i could dedicate my time to reading the rest. i was not disappointed and could not put this down!
Agatha is formidable and i like her character (although she can be quite unlikeable sometimes but somehow it works), however my only hang-up was that there were some questionable and problematic things said in the book that made me uncomfy. hopefully that’s not the case for the rest of the books in the series.

Tye Quiche of Death is an intriguing story about Agatha Raisin, who is rude and insecure, she is not particularly likable until you get to know her and she tends to spout off whatever enters her mind. Agatha just moved in a village from london and she wanted her neighbors to like her so she enter a Quiche baking contest but she didn't know how to bake so she bought it from a store. The problem is it killed a judge and she was accused then she started to investigate.
Loved how the characters were introduced. Agatha might not be my fave cozy character but she seems true to herself. Good storyline and chill setting.
