i really liked the comparison between their life experiences and the Quran and all the lessons they take from it
(and i personally just have a soft spot for stories about mixed cultures: trying to weave together communities and practices, feeling at home and also alienated, struggling with the differences in norms while simultaneously finding joy in them, yada yada)
good book 😌

a dear friend has recommended this to me for which i am very thankful. i have never imagined myself the type of person to enjoy someone's memoir: let alone not be able to put it down. yet, here we are. i tried to take my time with it, not rushing through it but reflecting and forming opinions.
i think i have gained a lot from this book: insight and knowledge about a culture and religion i am unfamiliar with, and insight and knowledge about myself. a rare and beautiful thing in one package.
there's a lot to appreciate here: discussions about the authenticity that seems to be the Thing around gayness; queer indispensability; reconciling your view of yourself with the view others have of you; finding a way to navigate religion and identity. all of this told through the stories from the Quran. i was only familiar with a few of them, i was introduced to most of them through this book. it certainly sparked my interest: i would gladly learn more about them.
as Lamya found their place through these discoveries, i think i might also be on the right path for the same. not yet there, but perilously close. and i am thankful for Lamya's part in this.
overall a great and profound read. i will happily go on to recommend this to others and will most likely reread it sooner than later.
