I found myself saying "yeah we get it, move on" so many times. Honestly it was a great story but frustratingly slow and repetitive. The big revelations were clear throughout the book and i felt like either: Sophia was an absolute idiot for not figuring it out, or Bayron thinks the readers are idiots and needs to spell it out for us.

I’m trying to gentle with this review because this is a true YA novel. It is clearly intended for 12-15 year-old girls, not adults twice that age.

While I appreciate what the author did and the message she sends and the diverse representation, this book really missed the mark for me. The FMC came across less as a powerful character and more like a selfish, petulant child. All of the characters were missing something in terms of character development, and too many things just “fell into place” for the FMC. I mean, do we ever find out WHY Constance was even at Cinderella’s tomb at the time she found Sophia? It would have benefitted greatly from some world building outside the 5 "rules."

I thought the twist was pretty good, but the ending just fell a bit flat for me because of the pacing.

I did enjoy the Grimm Brothers' references with the book of “accurate” stories vs. the “Disney” versions.

I think, for the intended audience, this book would be well received, but as an adult reading it, it just lacks substance.

i'm so sad i didn't love this book 😭

i enjoyed reading it because of the world-building, the magical elements, the references to fairy tales, it was all very interesting and unique. at the same time there is reference to assault, domestic abuse and homophobia which made the story a lot deeper and made me connect more closely with the characters. trigger warnings though if you don't feel comfortable reading that.

the problem was that i guessed the main plot twist at the beginning of the book because it's a pretty common thing in books/movies and i also really didn't like the romance.

this is a sapphic romance so already my thing, and i really liked the girls individually but their paring is just off. they fall for each other without really getting to know each other first and our mc internal monologue made me dislike the paring even more because she would get distracted by the love interest's beauty while something super important was happening (enough times that i realized it was a pattern). it was so frustrating to read, like we get it you like her but
you literally just found the body of a person that died 200 years ago and its ghost is talking to you, can you concentrate pleaseeeee???

I loved the message of resistance against the patriarchal/misogynistic way of living that the men created in this society. Seeing Sophia's growth in that resistance was nice to see and I love that she found love through that journey. <3

the ending felt rushed and sometimes the main character got on my nerves. she was too naive for what she had set out to do and she rubbed off on me the wrong way. Constance on the other hand was very loveable and it felt like she was in her element. the representation was accurate and it was what i loved most about the book. the story was inspiring but the execution could have been a little bit better. i would have loved a couple hundred more pages so the ending felt more "natural".
