I was not expecting how oppressive this culture would be! This isn't really a retelling, more of a continuation and re-imagining of the Cinderella story. Sophia doesn't want to marry any man, let alone one who would likely abuse her. I admire her conviction and how she stands up for what she wants. This turned into a quest story, which I also was not expecting lol, but I loved it!

Overall Thoughts:
⁕ This book was a very refreshing read after several heavier adult fiction novels. It’s fast-paced and full of delightful little twists. I definitely recommend it if you want something to pull you out of a slump.

⁕ All of the main and secondary characters are so loveable! I just wish the book was longer or that there was a sequel so that I could have spent more time with them!

⁕ I appreciate that this text pushed me to interrogate and question the role that heteronormativity plays in a lot of fantasy, as well as the overall impact that it has on readers and our culture as a whole.

This is a good book, I really enjoyed it and the parallels it makes to our world and how we treat otbers by rolling with a corrupt system. It is a quick read.

“And you’re not lost?”
I think for a moment. “Maybe I am. But the difference is that I want to be found. I’m not happy pretending everything is fine when I know it’s not.”
“And just who is it that you suppose will find you?” Amina asks. “It’ll be me,” I say. “I will find myself.”

There isn’t really a lot of romance in this story, but it didn’t bother me personally. Still, I would have liked more discussion about sexuality at some point. The rules of the kingdom are not only sexist but also homophobic. Multiple characters in this story aren’t straight and it would have been nice to shed a light on that at the end when new laws are enforced.
I would have liked to read more about Manford’s motivations and his character. With this depth it could have been a much more complex story.
Sophia also hides a dagger in her dress and attends a cotillion, I know some people really love that trope.

But still, I think the story has an important message.
To raise your voice is a hard thing to do in a society where women are not seen as equal by a lot of people. And it makes you sad, because some of the situations described are not only in this pages, but reality for some women or people who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Also the cover is absolutely gorgeous.

“Do not be silent. Raise your voice. Be a light in the dark.”
