"When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground."
Actual rating:4.5
Going into this, for some reason I thought I'd hate it. That was not the case. I really liked it. George R.R. Martin created an amazing world filled with strong characters. Now, I was spoiled for some things, because I had watched like the first three episodes for the TV show (stupid, I know). Going into this, based off of those three episode I thought Daenerys would be my favorite character, little did I know that my favorite would turn out to be Arya. I didn't expect to like Jon and Tyrion so much either. I was kind of meh on Robb, Bran, and Sansa. I did not like Eddard
Spoilerdon't have to worry about him though anymore!
,Cat, every Lannister ever (except Tyrion), and Khal Drogo/basically the Dothraki in general. There were things I didn't like,
Spoilerall the rape and misogyny
but all in all a great start to a series that I will be continuing with soon.

"A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge."

"Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you."

This was the series that got me back into reading for pleasure, after a 4-year break. It is a masterpiece of fantasy and war. George R.R. Martin never shies away from describing raw emotion, the devastations of war, reality, and humanity. I have never read another book or series like it, and he is one of the writers to whom I compare other authors to. The breadth of characters he is able to write about, with such vast differences between them, is remarkable as so few authors are able to do it. He is also one of my favorite authors purely because of his stance on women.

Interviewer: "There's one thing that is interesting about your books.I noticed that you write women really well and really different. Where does that come from?"
Martin: "You know... I've always considered women to be people."

It's 807 pages, and I was hooked into the series at page 800. It's dark and light with mystery, intrigue, war, and conflict and enough characters that you can fine plenty to love and plenty to hate. The design of the book can seem a bit spastic with each chapter focusing on a different character. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I just don't care about some of the characters--and thus chapters--at all.
