Подача интересная, местами весьма справедливо показано то, о чем мы часто забываем. Но повествование слишком растянуто. Понятно, что для обывателя писано, но местами скучно читать большое количество пояснений весьма очевидных вещей.

Kitabin anlatis seklinde yada Turkce versiyonunda bir tatsizlik var bence. Anlatim sekli cok basit olmasina ragmen, bazi cumlelerdeki anlatim bozukluklari celiskili bilgilere sebebiyet veriyor. Bilgiler gercekten ilginc, guzel bir kitap ama doyurucu degil.

This book was a lot of fun to read thanks to the author's engaging writing style and I learned a TON about the gut. It's the undiscovered country of the body, in a lot of ways, and we are only beginning to understand all of it's connections to our bodily and mental health and well-being.

Likes: The cute illustrations and humerous approach to the subject of our guts.

Dislikes: There was nothing unlikable about this fun read I recommend it to anyone who likes to learn about the body.

Now, thanks to this book, I often think of my little gut passengers and wonder if what I'm eating or doing will make them happy. Here, gut microbes, have some delicious jelly beans.

Especially at the beginning of the book, the author is very funny and it is clear that she loves gastroenterology and microbiome subjects. I love that about her, and had previously enjoyed seeing her enthusiasm in a Netflix documentary.

She does a decent job balancing support for good bacteria while recognizing that there are harmful bacteria. But I fear that she doesn’t emphasize the latter enough to deter the crunchy mama types from ignoring it and using the rest of the book to support their neglect of hygiene, food safety, etc. 

In addition, while I understand that her focus is on bacteria, she should have explained and warned more about the (co)existence and risk of viruses, about which the “many are beneficial!” mindset is completely erroneous and harmful. As we’ve seen during the COVID-19 pandemic (which started after she wrote and published this book), many people think that repeatedly catching viruses is good for your health. This is false and causes significant harms. Again, I fear ignorant readers will use this book to bolster that mindset.

She does give disclaimers for some claims that are from studies not really considered scientifically stable (such as being conducted once on only a few people).

But there are some claims that are a little contradictory to what I've learned from microbiologists and allergists.

For example:

- "The higher the hygiene standards in a country, the higher that nation's incidence of allergies and autoimmune diseases. The more sterile a household is, the more its members will suffer from allergies and autoimmune diseases" (226)

This definitely doesn't include air quality because it's been found that air contaminants increase allergies and autoimmune disease risks.

- "Disinfectants have no place in a normal household. They are appropriate only if a family member is sick or the dog poops on the carpet" (226). 

While the rest of her point after this is accurate, describing how just regular detergent "soaps" are better and sufficient most of the time. She neglects to mention the importance of disinfectants in the kitchen after prepping raw meat on the counter/sink.

- Talking about all the potential benefits of probiotics... Although she does mention how there are many studies that have found NO benefit of taking probiotic supplements, and the large possibility that those beneficial bacteria might not even survive the stomach to get where they need to go, she still concludes "better safe than sorry" to TAKE probiotics. But, what I've learned from microbiologists is that although for most people it won't cause harm (besides being an unnecessary expenditure), there are some immunocompromised people in whom there is a slight risk.

Far from as fatphobic as other health books, as she doesn’t blame it as the fault of the fat person for being fat. But does still view being fat as a negative situation, and doesn’t fully acknowledge the potential to be fully healthy and fat.

Easy to read, funny, and informative. There is a surprising amount of interesting "facts" in this short book that caused me to say to myself, "Is this for real? Why have I never learnt about this?" My only major complaint is that the e-book version I read did not provide enough citations and references.

3.5 stars— some interesting parts but jumps around a lot and feels a bit disorganised
