I found the first section mesmerising, the second intriguing (futuristic girl on girl action with mangrove plantoids?!), and the third difficult to stay focused on. all in all, a really interesting short story collection about family and identity.

The second, futuristic, part was my highlight. I was really into the plot, language and analogy. The short stories on either side were interesting reflections on queer, first nation experiences. Overall strong storytelling but felt a bit hit and miss for me (probably because it isn't written for me, and that's cool).

I appreciate all this book does and how it has great Indigenous rep and LGBTQIA+ rep, specifically sapphic rep, but I feel like I was too dumb to understand this. I got really confused with the separate stories that were still connected and I got confused with the characters when they switched POV's. I think I'd need to re-read it very slowly to understand it. Nothing against the book or the author I think this is purely a me thing.

My god the writing was just incredible!!

Part 2: Water was my favourite of the three sections — what a sharp piece. I found in part 1 the generational links were a bit difficult to follow at times and in part 3 some of the stories were just so short! I did however adore basically everything i read — i HIGHLY recommend. It was also great to be from Brisbane and know exactly where each thing was taking place and recognising exact locations !!
