This series continues to be really good. This volume is even more graphically violent, though, than the first one. Mouse's transformation into Ghost is very chilling. Be warned that this is a parallel story and does not have the same characters as [b:Ship Breaker|7095831|Ship Breaker (Ship Breaker, #1)|Paolo Bacigalupi|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1327874074s/7095831.jpg|7352929], except for Tool. I am interested to see how the two stories are going to come together in what I hope will be the next book. Because of the violence, I think this book is most appropriate for older teens.
Paolo Bacigalupi gives me heart palpitations. His writing that is. A story that causes anxiety for the outcome of any given scene that I am listening to, shortness of breath and pounding heart is a great story.
It's a continuation of the Shipbreaker series, from a different set of viewpoints. Mahlia is the main voice, but it's also told via her friend Mouse as well as soldiers who invade the village where Mahlia and Mouse survive to the best of their abilities. All are victims of the upheaval of a world gone upside down and doing their best to move as forward as possible.
The one character tying the series together is Tool, a half-man hybrid behemoth, slurringly known as a dogface. Mahlia saves him after finding him in the swamp, but it's for her own survival needs. She wants to escape and take Mouse with her after soldiers invade. She needs to make her way to the Drowned Cities where she grew up.
Escape, capture, torture, survival at all costs. Heart-poundingly excellent story, characters, premise. Dystopian future tale at its finest.
I can definitely recommend this book, series and author.

This book was not what I wanted. It's not what I thought it was, and it's not what I wanted to read at all.
I had thought that this book would be a continuation of Ship Breaker, that it would be the rest of that story. What it was instead was an alternative America where there is now tribal warfare like in some parts of Africa. Child soldiers, torture, maiming all of it.
So if I had wanted to read something like this I would have read a true account because I would have chosen it for myself.
SO, it was Ok. I wouldn't have read it if I had known, I wouldn't recommended it without letting the person know what it's really about. For people 15 on up who like war survivor story.

This was incredibly a dark an terrifying world ravaged by war with people just as horrible. Mr. Bacigalupi did a fantastic job with his characterization creating a realistic characters struggling for survival in a awful world. The half-man creature Tool was awesoem just liek in Ship Breaker. I loved him total beast! hahahahaha
I enjoyed this so much more then Ship Breaker! To me The Drowned Cities was so much more interesting and action packed. Not only was the story more interesting but I found out main characters so much more interesting. They had such a deeper background and purpose and I really enjoyed that. This definitely kept me on the edge of my seat and kept me wanting more.
Bacigalupi is one of my favorite authors. I love his gritty dystopians!
I thought this was the sequel to Ship Breaker - it is not. It is set in the same world but has none of the same characters. It is quite violent, especially for a YA novel. Extremely believable characters, well-drawn world. Frighteningly real.

3 to 3.5 stars. I liked Tool and the world Paolo creates, but some of the rest of the book felt too much like a movie script

A captivating thrill ride through a post-climate change futuristic world. Adults would enjoy this young adult novel as well.
