3.5 - pretty good
Narrator is…ok-ish.

This is the first book in the Firebrand series, and my second time reading through it. It's been a couple of years and honestly, I'd forgotten most of it, so this felt like I was discovering it all over again. #Bonus Emma Bellamy is set to do great things as a Cyber Squad detective, she thinks, until her detective training assignment comes and she's relegated to the Supe Squad, where detectives with no future go. Supernaturals who break the law are dealt with by their own kind and Human crime is handled elsewhere.

Even though she's unhappy about it, Emma is determined to get through the rotation and do her best. But things don’t go smoothly, at all. There are murders, cranky werewolves, a helpful vampire, bored co-workers, disappearances, and more make this a rotation to remember.

This starts out as your typical Police Procedural with a supernatural twist, until Emma is murdered and wakes up in the morgue. She has no idea what she is, how she's alive and neither do those around her. She is obviously determined to find out who killed her and sets out to do just that. Helen Harper writes likeable characters and this book just sucks you right in. On to book #2.

Meh

Worldbuilding:
Was good. It takes place in the world as we know it... just with some 'extra's' in the form of supes. Vampires, werewolves and Others (pixies, gremlins and such).
We got to know a good chunk of how things are run in the supernatural world and how the Supes Squad fits into it (or well, doesn't).
Scenes and environments were clear and well detailed.

Character development:
Was good. Emma (or D'Artagnan if you will) was an interesting character who pretty much got thrown to the wolves (no pun intended). The fact that she seems to be a supe of unknown origin is intriguing, even though it felt she kinda rolled with it instead of freaking out even a little but. I mean.. yeah, I would freak out a bit *cough*!
And then we have the even more intriguing Lukas who keeps our detective out of trouble, covering for her and helping her. But why? What do we really know about him? Not much... yet, but I have high hopes for getting to know him better in the next instalment.
There is a good dynamic going between all the factions, I liked it!

Pacing and flow:
Were good! The story kept my attention (I did read it in one go) and it had a great balance between conversation and all the action. Throw in some curveballs and voila!

The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors. There is no sex described (if that is important to you).

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and I found it to be a really good and enjoyable read. It has a very interesting plot and what can I say, I just wanted to know more... MORE :D Having read the book, that feeling hasn't simmered down (of course), so here I am, patiently (not) waiting for the next book.
If you've come this far in my review.. all I can say is, pick it up and enjoy! :)
