I was promised a kickass lesbian crime novel and I was delivered this mess...
Idk if I'll write a more in depth review later on, but my main issues with this novel were: The characters were inconsistent and unlikable, the case was a complete mess, there were internalized homophobia and internalized misogyny, there were so many transphobic comments that made me super uncomfortable, and aaaaaa lot of sl*t shaming and kink shaming.

I'm dnfing this.
There were a lot of problems with the writing, from the fact it was dual POV and it would JUST CHANGE, with no division between their flow of thought and actions, to the very stereotypical portrait of lesbians, and the lgbtq+ community, to the open transphobic comments. Apparently, it gets worse and there are a lot of trigger warnings and more upsetting content. All around a shit show.

Hill definitely keeps me on the edge of my seat with her mystery/crime stories. The “I love you’s” from Sam were a little too soon, but I did not feel as if her feelings were unbelievable. I was not expecting an emotional trigger that occurred in the story, so be warned. Overall, this was an enjoyable read. Oh, and I agree with other reviewers, the ex-boyfriend was both irritating and a bit creepy. I wonder if he will show up in the other books.

A very competent lesbian crime thriller which introduces 2 detectives, Tori Hunter and Samantha Kennedy, and their squad in Dallas, Texas.
This book manages to create a compelling crime narrative, following the actions of a vicious serial killer, whilst creating a believable and very readable romance between the two leads. The characterisation shines in this example of lesbian crime writing, which doesn't always happen in this genre. The reader grows to really care for Tori, and indeed Sam, because of the way the characters have been carefully crafted. There is just enough backstory to keep up our interests in the history of the characters, paired with a very well done love story (I generally can't/don't read or like any romance in my crime novels, so anything overly soppy or cliche is out for me, but the romance here is wonderfully told).
I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series; if it is anything like this first outing, I'll be very pleased.
