Vernestra and Imiri are one of my favorite Jedi in this high republic series. They are young and I really enjoy how the author develops their characters. They are facing danger, but they are also learning new things about themselves.. the story was ok, I enjoyed the challenges and the way how the character overcome the obstacles.

This is the best Justina Ireland book in the High Republic series thus far. The plot is decent and fast-paced. There are a few plot holes and convenient villain monologues but that can be chalked up to being a children's book. I still really dislike Ireland's characters, particularly Avon and Vernestra. Imri is kind of just there.

Oh man, do I dislike Avon. Girl is a mad scientist in the making, very much "wanted to see if I could, didn't think if I should". She's blows up a whole ass planet with her shenanigans and faces no consequences. Pretty sure we can put some solid blame on her for giving Palpatine the idea and theory on how to make the Death Star. Imri also should not have given her such a pass on stealing his kyber crystal. I don't know if this is officially canon or if I've just read too much fanfiction but in my headcanon at least, kyber crystels are sacred to the Jedi and to steal and experiment on one is incredibly disrespectful.

Vernestra still reminds me too much of Anakin, knighted way too young, lacks impulse control and critical thinking skills.

Phenomenal! Even though the book is for a younger crowd, I would definitely recommend this to anyone. Note - if you are trying to read the High Republic books in chronological order, I recommend reading this before Fallen Star. Even though it was published later, the events take place before Fallen Star.

Ok, I really wanted to love this book. It features beloved characters from A Test of Courage, so I thought it would be like picking up where we left off. Unfortunately the plot is much slower that AToC, and takes a long time to really get rolling. That said this book has amazing emotional beats, and great thematic ties to current live-action Star Wars shows, and once the plot started moving it ramped up fast.

The characters are where this really shines: Vernestra is a solid character who can carry any level of reader book, Imri is groaning into a similarly great character and sees significant character growth, as does scientific prodigy and known rascal Avon Starros.
