There was a lot to enjoy in this book! Many of the themes were certainly tailor-made for me. But I felt as though it couldn’t decide what it wanted to be; the tone would go pure fairy tale at times, while trending back towards a less stylized narrative at others, and it didn’t feel intentional. Also, I just found that most of the characters’ realizations, moments of growth, etc, were unearned. I’d be right there with Tokuda-Hall in a character’s perspective and emotional reality ... and then I’d be kicked out of it when she suddenly started telling me, in a plain, flat way, that the character had undergone a change I hadn’t felt and didn’t believe. I was left feeling unsatisfied.
