An engaging, gender- and genre-bending fantasy swashbuckler adventure tale. Maggie Tokuda-Hall packs a lot into this book, but if you like sea lore, I think it's worth the effort.

The world the author wants to build is so great, it's a shame it was shoved into 300 pages. There are plenty of times it would have benefited from more exposition or more world building. Characters were well written and fleshed, but also suffered slightly from the shortness of the book. It seemed all character development was logical but incredibly rushed.

THIS BOOK!!! Immediately added to my list of fav books ever! I never wanted to put it down I just constantly needed to know what was going to happen next. The two main characters are so charming and had me rooting for them from moment one. The side characters are super well written too some had you loving them and their flaws right away, others had you hating from moment one, and others you loved/hated in the beginning and then completely swapped opinions on by the end. The world was well built and felt very fleshed out with the relationships btwn nations, classes, and peoples playing big roles in setting up this book’s world. The magic system and the role of the sea were super unique as well! Some ppl have been saying the romance was too rushed (which is their opinion and is valid) but as someone who usually hates romance I thought I’d throw in my two cents. imo the fast pace of the romance makes sense since 1.) the characters are teens and teens are known to fall hard and fast when in love and 2.) bc the characters had very little good in their lives so of course the moment they felt the goodness of the other and the goodness the other brought out in them they were going to hold on for dear life. Anyways 10/10 read, would recommend to anyone and everyone!!
