🧡 Book has “14+” for age recommendation. I read it in one day. It was delightful. Nobility and urchin, female and he/she/enby, found family. Pretty great all around.

3.5 stars. i’m a little conflicted about this book. it wasn’t bad. it wasn’t boring either. it just wasn’t what i anticipated and i suppose it wasn’t what quite wanted. i’ll definitely still read the 2nd book, but i can’t help but feel that this book had missed opportunities

i normally don’t go for dual perspective books, they get muddy in their story telling fairly quickly, but this book definitely did it better than others.
im a sucker for several different things: odd mermaids, romance, magic, PIRATES, and thrill. cannot believe i found this book, it is my kryptonite.
florian was very interesting to learn about over the years book. while the author consistently used she/her pronouns for them, i did appreciate the ending of his journey of knowing who flora/florian is ends with them accepting both. evelyn was Very prissy, even when she was meant to be the “good Imperial”. I loved her personally, but again, she was slightly still who she was raised to be. rake had a lot of potential, and he lived up to a good 90% of it. that isnt meant to be an insult, he has more room to improve over into the next book if they use his character again. the reveal of him being the supremes operative was cool, but i prefer him just being a cool guy yk. theres gonna be some stuff with genevieve ofc, and shes just a kid so i cant be that annoyed with her, but oh my god the shit she said about Quark? baby, you are Not the one to talk working with the damn colonizers… Hell no. Ayer was cool until she wasnt. i dont give a shit about your empire when you are literally planning on killing a kid to start a war. alfie felt Useless, but he was vital to flora. he kept them going and while he didnt really show his love to them, hes okay. drunk all the time but okay. Fuck the Commander and i think thats all my character takes
the ending genuinely had me upset at first, with killing evelyn off So quickly from a PIECE OF FUCKING WOOD? but its made up with the mermaid bit that was teased in the beginning

I picked up this book after my friend begged me to, as it’s one of their favorites. Naturally it being a fantasy with queer pirates, witches, and mermaids, I picked it up without hesitation. I’m glad I did and enjoyed following everyone’s stories and seeing major character development and the discovery of identity. I enjoy that the queer rep is a casual thing where everyone kind of accepts queerness for what it is. There’s quite a few lower reviews on this book and they aren’t necessarily wrong with the comments on how certain aspects were rushed, but I have always rated on my enjoyment rather than the structure. I can’t wait to pick up the second book.
Graphic: Addiction, Alcoholism, Death, Genocide, Racism, Slavery, Torture, Violence, Blood, Colonisation, War, Injury/Injury detail, Classism
Moderate: Misogyny, Grief, Abandonment
It feels like there are a lot of loose ends in this book. Maybe this was a purpose for a sequel one day. Overall, this is a magically love story and it had my heart in a Vice grip. It was cute the way Flora and Evelyn ended up together in the end.
