It was fine. I guess it was a wlw book that was also trying to be trans-friendly with the pronouns. No spice. The relationship was rushed, from zero to love-of-my-life real fast.
Mermaids, pirates, queer love story, and witchcraft. Loved it.
Very fun and quick read, and I look forward to the next installment.

I thought I wasn’t going to like this book, but I was sorely mistaken. This book was witty, thrilling, and heartwarming. The love between the main characters is heartwarming and the main character Flora feels real in her contradictions.
I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of diversity in this book. There are multiple non binary characters, the main cast are mostly POC, and the love story is between a lesbian and her nonbinary partner.
Overall great read I only wish more of the colonialists died and we spent more time on the mermaids.

On the one hand, I enjoyed this tale immensely. It read like a fairy tale, with some really fascinating elements baked in. But being a fairy tale, some things are not explained, developed naturally or purposeful to the story. For example, the main romance develops quickly and it’s unclear why. Kind of a “they fell in love, move to next plot point plz” vibe. The training with the witch was interesting and introduced the idea of “everything has a price” which ties into the ending… but Flora’s own training including the mirror bit felt like they were dropped from the plot soon after they happened.
Too many bad guys, including the commander on land who existed, apparently to give Evelyn a piece of information inadvertently. The Imperials are built up to be terrible. The main spy imperial waterboards someone, but they made her somewhat sympathetic earlier in the story, so that felt odd. The pirates are terrible. The brother is messed up. Just…
You know what it is? Maybe I just needed consistency of character. Flora/Florian used gender as a mask/convenience, when really, I needed to understand more deeply if it was a mask, or if F truly required both personas and what that looked like when she accepted that. Many characters in the story are used the same way… so they felt like actors playing roles and not actual people. But that makes it harder to connect.
Beautiful prose. Not sorry I read it. But not perfect by any means.
