Mermaids, pirates, princesses, and it's queer. There's constant twists even when you think you know where it's going.

I've had this book sitting in my digital TBR pile thanks to a corrupted file that I was originally sent, and never got around to reading the regular version of it until now. There's a lot to like about The Mermaid, the Witch and the Sea. It's a young (and I think it skews heavily to the 'young') adult novel that features a lot of diverse characters who have to grapple with identity and complex issues like colonialism. I think because it really is aimed at a younger audience as opposed to adults (like me) who enjoy YA books, at times it can feel a little too neatly put together: characters fall in love without much interaction, other character get dropped without being mentioned again (Xenobia, for example). However, I suspect these issues won't bother a younger crowd. Overall, this is a solid read for a young reader looking for a little fantasy that deal with some hard issues.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book.

I went into this thinking it was a middle grade book for some reason and halfway through thought to myself “wow this is surprisingly dark for a middle grade book” and then only much later did I realize that it was in fact YA…..but anyways, I did not expect to finish this book in 3 days….everything simply drew me in and I loved how the author touched on topics such as colonialism, gender identity, rape, alcohol abuse, gender roles, and human nature. I’d have to say that all the characters are so iconic in their own ways and I cannot recommend this book enough!!!

I enjoyed getting to know the characters. At times I felt I could imagine what might be said next; at other times the MCs surprised or challenged me. I want to know more about Xenobia! Overall, an approachable examination of colonialism and classism.

Immediately hooked. Fabulous and unique queer adventure story, stunning character development, and an epilogue to cheer for. Kate Rudd’s fabulous narration adds to the story - so well done *cheers in queer*
