While I enjoyed this book it is not one of my favourites in the series. It felt a little slow, a little long, a little predictable.

DNF’d like 30 pages in. It felt like the cardinal rule of “show, don’t tell” was being broken on every page. I don’t need a lesson in ship anatomy, there’s a diagram inside the book. Sadly, I loved her other books but this one was a bust for me.

I would give this book 10 stars out of 5 if I could. Best book I’ve read this year by far. This book explores trauma; its impact on one’s growth, lack thereof, and journey to understand and move beyond experiences that both destroy and recreate. This central theme kept the story on pace. I love Hava’s curious, contemplative, indignant narration. She was lovely. This book brought me to tears multiple times. I’m already excited at the thought of rereading it.

I have really enjoyed the Graceling Series and this was easily my favourite book of the five so far.
This book follows on immediately from book 4, Winterkeep, but it is instead written from Hava’s point of view which is a character we haven’t heard from yet so its interesting to hear the new POV.
The story chronicles the groups journey from Winterkeep back to Monsea and whilst it is all told from Hava’s viewpoint we do still get to meet a lot of wonderful and diverse characters.
The book is full of adventure and emotion and covers some really tough topics at times, especially with Hava still trying to heal from her childhood trauma.

I absolutely love Hava as the lead character, for me as an autistic woman, she felt very relatable and I actually highlighted dozens and dozens of passages that suggested to me that she was in fact autistic herself. I’ve never seen it mentioned anywhere that she is autistic, but that was definitely how she felt to me as I could relate so strongly to so many of her traits and feelings. She is incredibly strong but also very damaged after the way she was treated as a child and watching her try to navigate friendships and relationships and new experiences whilst trying to heal was a beautiful experience.
The side characters all have distinct personalities and felt fully formed so that I came to care for them also.
The world building is done so well and I loved getting to explore more of this world with these characters.
I truly hope that this isn’t the end of this series as it just goes from strength to strength
