I liked that so much of the book was about these characters being so tight knit and getting to know one another but Hava was not an enjoyable character to be in the mind of and the book (specifically the journey on the boat) felt too long.

Hava is the perfect unlikeable yet incredibly loveable protagonist. I love that Cashore challenged herself with a first-person perspective. At first I really didn’t like it, and then it grew on me throughout Hava’s journey. It fit Hava’s story and voice. I don’t think it would’ve worked as well in third person like her other novels. Anyway, I am so glad I picked up Fire earlier this year because it brought me to Hava, and I am happy I lived in her story for some time. I absolutely will re-read, and I absolutely will cry over Hava, Hope, and all of their fox babies.

this was fun and thoughtful. i'm very curious about the writing style though because it does read as if hava has some sort of neurodivergence (the language, sentence structure, and thought patterns all read immature but she's in her twenties and i never really picked up on this sense in winterkeep). maybe i'm forgetting something from bitterblue but in my defense i read that in uhhhh middle school

Hava's perspective on the world was very interesting to me, especially with Bitterblue's perspective in the previous book. I was glad the book had so much space to explore the world and the different contained areas Hava passed through - The Monsea, the arctic, and Bitterblue City. I also really liked the ending and all the different new characters Hava met and had to deal with, as well as old favourite characters.

When I first started this book, I was apprehensive because I didn't know how much I would enjoy Hava as a protagonist. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and have a new appreciation for Hava as a character.

Some might think this book is slow, and it is a some points, but I love just sitting in Hava's mind as she processes everything around her and grows as a character. She's stubborn and frustrating at times but that comes from not knowing how to be herself and how the trauma of her childhood affected how she forms relationships.

I really enjoyed readinf the trek through the icy wasteland that the characters of the shipwreck have to endure. It was harrowing and I was thoroughly invested. I also really love the character of Captain Annet.

When the characters return home, I would say the events slow down quite a bit and my investment drops a little, but I still enjoyed reading.
