Glad this was a short book otherwise I would have dnf'd

This had creepy vibes and the unknown of whether the writing was a reflection on the main characters mind as it was getting more obscure as the book goes on.

I thought this was a nice gentle nod to the vintage cinemas and how they used to be rather than the corporate giants we see today.

Really unsure who this book is for.

Completely wild while also being calm and careful throughout. I was really entertained, thrilled, shocked and strangely comforted by this novel. The women's prize longlist this year makes me ask, 'Are women okay?', and the answer is...no, and this book agrees. Recommend on audio!

Ugh. No. and WHY?!
I heard about this one because it is currently longlisted for the The Women’s Prize this year.

And let me tell you that, first chapter in, I was so excited!
I immediately loved that every chapter was titled as an artsy film (I even watched Midnight Cowboy because of this book). And that the story was about an independent theater. The subtle creepiness that you start to feel in the first chapter was exciting as well ...would there be a ghost or murder/mystery element to this book? I appreciated the initial quirky fashion descriptions and her writing is good. You cannot deny that.

Pretty early on you discover that nothing really is happening.
No explanation or resolve whatsoever to anything that actually attracted my initial attention in chapter one. I kept reading to the bitter end because.... what was with the handprint on the mirror?!
No answers,
But PLENTY of details on rats, mice poop, shit, piss, semen, vomit - and to an insane degree.

The author brought up The Shining’s scene with the woman in the tub several times. Clearly she had a still shot of this scene tacked on her vision board while writing. Picture that scene’s energy and you’ll get an idea of this story. Just without the balance of the rest of The Shining - because in this book that energy is every character, as well as the theater. At one point a character is even shedding skin and purposely dropping it on the floor.

If this book was supposed to be nostalgic of older theaters, or romanticize films in any way- at least in my case, it failed. (And this is coming from a person who watched Supersize Me and immediately went to McDonalds for a BigMac and Diet Coke).
The only lasting impression I got was that I do NOT want to go to any theater for a long time - if I do I'm bringing Clorox wipes! and I probably won’t be ordering popcorn.
