What I liked I really liked but I just didn’t fall in love with it.
Love a gothic horror story, unclear if protagonist is losing her mind or is being slowly consumed by the theatre, protagonist could absolutely have murdered all those people, obsession/loneliness/desire tale.
Wish we had more time with the ensemble cast, some of them felt more like acquaintances than anything else, and wish we’d had a little more acknowledgement of the ambiguous supernatural elements from others so it were less clear that much of the paranormal aspect is a result of mental illness.

I felt almost guilty to enjoy this strange, surreal novel that swirls into a nightmare.
Set in an anonymous city, almost definitely in Scotland, and narrated by "Holly" - a woman with an unknown past and a fake name. Every page felt dirty and sticky as I was pulled deeper into the world of The Paradise and the Hell that it becomes.
Beautifully written with a encyclopaedic knowledge of film, this will haunt me.

More of a 3.5 rating tbh
While it has it's moments where it feels dragged on it was quite an eerie and vivid read and I was hooked for most of it. I thought it was interesting to look into cinema through the eyes of the workers in one. Also someone needs to contact David Cronenberg to make this a feature film!

I mean, yes, capitalism is, in fact, a great horror of our times, as this book points out (almost didactically?), which is exactly why for me this fails as horror fiction. It's fine as a visceral and grimy coming-of-age tale, if weirdly (and likely intentionally) trite with its later plot twists. But horror? No, not that.
